The Indian government is taking new steps to strengthen the country's digital identity system. To this end, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a special biometric update campaign across the country for school students, making Aadhaar biometric updates mandatory for school-age children. To simplify the process, special camps were organised directly in the school premises so that children and their parents do not need to visit the Aadhaar centre.

In this process, till now more than 1.2 crore children have updated their Aadhaar biometrics under this initiative. This information was given in an official statement issued on Tuesday. This campaign is being run for children of 7 to 15 years of age by making MBU in Aadhaar free for a period of one year starting from October 1, 2025. It is not necessary that children have to complete MBU only in the camps organized in the school, but apart from the camps organized in the schools, children can also complete their MBU by visiting any Aadhaar Enrolment Centre and Aadhaar Seva Kendra located across India.
More than 1,03,000 schools participated in this campaign, which can be seen as a historic achievement and has helped lakhs of school students complete the mandatory biometric update in Aadhaar conveniently from the comfort of their school premises," the statement said. Lakhs of students completed the biometric update during school hours. This reduced the problem of long queues at Aadhaar centres and made the process easier for families.
The campaign was successfully conducted with the support of the State Education Department, District Administration, school management, and other government agencies. However, the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) played a key role in the campaign's success. This digital system helped identify students who needed biometric updates. Schools were able to organize update camps only for eligible students. This allowed UIDAI teams to reach more students in less time.
More than 4,000 biometric machines were used during this campaign, and this number may be increased in the coming months to expedite the process. The Aadhaar biometric update service for children aged 7 to 15 is free until October 2026. Parents and guardians are advised to complete the update for their children within this timeframe.
