During its WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple announced a significant refresh of its automation tool in the form of an AI-driven Shortcuts app, marking another step forward in bringing artificial intelligence into its ecosystem. With Apple Intelligence heavily integrated into the Shortcuts experience, users can access a whole new degree of automation, personalization, and productivity right on their devices.
As per Apple, the new Shortcuts app will be able to access the capability of its on-device large language model (LLM) directly, courtesy Apple Intelligence. The implication is that shortcuts can now leverage AI to interpret, process, and respond to information in a smarter way than ever. In addition, developers and power users will be able to craft richer, more intelligent shortcuts by accessing these AI models locally or through Private Compute, maintaining data privacy and secure processing.
One of the highlights of this release is the fact that users can input AI responses directly into their shortcuts. To illustrate, a pupil can now create a shortcut that contrasts the audio record of a lecture against their class notes and then employs AI to underline any important points they might have overlooked. Even better, users can now also integrate ChatGPT responses into their workflow so that third-party AI can augment shortcut functionality.
Apple also brings in a new idea of "Intelligent Actions" shortcuts empowered by AI that connect seamlessly with Apple Intelligence tools. These include Writing Tools for summarizing text and Image Playground for generating images, turning Shortcuts not just smarter, but more innovative. With the touch of a few fingers, users can now create routines once inaccessible or too complicated for people who do not know how to script.
The new features are in testing starting this Monday, allowing developers and users to test early what can be done with AI in Shortcuts. This revamp seems to be an effort at something Apple is doing in its overall strategy in AI, having started last year by announcing an improved Siri. Whereas the Siri update was delayed, this new Shortcuts experience can be considered as a stopgap measure, providing similar functionality to those who are willing to put a little effort in creating automation workflows.
In the past, the Shortcuts app has been the go-to for power users due to its extensive customization and scripting capabilities. Humans have employed it to make personalized memes, produce GIFs, organize notes for meetings, measure time, construct playlists, create location reminders, download files, and much more. But the learning curve kept people who were not as tech-oriented away. Apple is hoping to bring automation into the hands of mainstream consumers with AI integration, reducing the learning curve and making the iPhone and other Apple hardware seem more intelligent and more proactive.
Effectively, this release is more than merely a reface it's a radical change in the way people interact with automation on their Apple device. By merging robust AI with an intuitive interface, Apple is making Shortcuts a dynamic feature for everyone from students and professionals through to creators and casual users.
