Apple Upgrade Program Launching July 28 With Klarna Financing for iPhone, iPad & Mac

Apple is reportedly replacing its iPhone Upgrade Program with Apple Upgrade, a new Klarna-powered financing service for iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches, offering flexible payment plans and early upgrade options.

Apple Upgrade programme

Apple is believed to be launching a totally new financing system in the U.S., which will revolutionize the way people buy and upgrade their Apple gadgets. As per the report by Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter, Apple is working on Apple Upgrade that is set to debut on July 28, replacing its popular iPhone Upgrade Program with an improved financing system that goes beyond iPhones.

Unlike the previous program, which focused on only the iPhone, the upcoming Apple Upgrade financing scheme is believed to cater to a larger variety of Apple gadgets, ranging from iPads, Macs, to even the Apple Watches. Apple is said to have collaborated with the buy now pay later (BNPL) firm Klarna in building the financing platform, which allows people to make payments in several installments with early upgrades available.

Apple Upgrade Will Cover More Than Just iPhones

One of the greatest things about the future Apple Upgrade service is the support for a wider range of devices. Apple is going to make an adjustment in its services and extend the financing not only for iPhones but other premium Apple products as well.

It will be possible for customers to buy iPhones, iPads, Macs, and even Apple watches under one plan. This is one of the most significant changes that Apple plans to make regarding the financing strategy.

Moreover, Apple is supposed to stop new enrollments for the existing iPhone Upgrade Plan when the new Apple Upgrade service will be officially launched in the USA.

Flexible Financing Terms for Different Apple Devices

As per the findings from the report, there are finance periods for the Apple Upgrade which will depend on the type of item bought.

For the iPhone and Apple Watch, consumers will be provided with 24-month finance programs while Macs and iPads will have 36-month financing periods. This will enable customers to enjoy flexible terms where they will have the option to settle their device early or change it to a new model even before finishing their finance periods.

At the end of the program, there will be the option to either keep the device with a final payment or get out of it according to their chosen program.

With the program, customers will have many opportunities as opposed to the traditional installment programs.

Apple Shifts Towards a Subscription-Style Leasing Model

One of the most striking characteristics of the Apple Upgrade program is the fact that it operates using a subscription-type lease system instead of a normal retail lending program.

In addition, the financing would be provided by Klarna, who will undertake a soft inquiry of the individual applying for it. Due to the nature of the soft inquiry, there is no effect on the credit rating of the individual. However, some individuals might incur extra charges based on the financing arrangement.

Apple is reported to be marketing the program based on reduced monthly charges in order to make the expensive Apple gadgets cheaper to afford.

Apple Upgrade vs iPhone Upgrade Program

First, there are several significant differences between the new Apple Upgrade and the current iPhone Upgrade program that Apple has.

While the old program had limited functionality, which allowed it to support iPhones only, its loans were provided by Citizens One and lasted for 24 months at 0% APR. When customers made all monthly payments, the device became their property. At the same time, they received AppleCare+ protection, which is a valuable feature for potential customers.

On the other hand, according to Apple Upgrade, customers would have to pay off a final payment to own the device in question. If not, the customers will just return the device.

In addition to that, the program differs from the old one because it will not have AppleCare+ in its package anymore. Thus, customers will have to buy it separately in order to get their devices insured against accidental damage.

Not Every Apple Device Will Be Eligible

Despite the fact that Apple Upgrade makes more devices eligible for financing, not all of the Apple products will get to qualify.

According to the report, the Apple Watch SE, basic iPad, iPhone 16, and rumored MacBook Neo are not likely to be included in the financing service. Apple seems to concentrate the service only on its premium range of products even though no official list has been made by the company yet.

More information about the eligibility is likely to be provided once the service launches.

Will Apple Upgrade Launch in India?

For now, it seems that Apple Upgrade is available only in the United States.

No confirmation has yet been received from the company stating that Apple plans to launch the financing plan in India or other countries. Apple has been continuously expanding its finance-related activities all over the world by partnering with banks, but it hasn’t mentioned anything related to when Apple Upgrade will become available in India.

So, buyers in India can take this news as a US-based announcement for now.

Should all reports turn out to be true, then the new Apple Upgrade may well end up becoming one of the most significant financial strategies introduced by the company in some time now. With the launch of this service, Apple is making it possible for consumers to remain loyal to its products and pay less money for premium hardware thanks to the expansion into Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches along with more flexible financing options.

While all the features that Apple has included into this strategy may well attract consumers who like to upgrade their devices regularly, it is also worth noting that there are no AppleCare+ plans included here and the option to make a last payment for the hardware at the end of the process. The official launch of this service is scheduled for July 28th in the USA.
