ChatGPT for Teens Launches With Learning Tools and Stronger Safety Controls

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated AI experience for users aged 13 to 17 featuring learning tools, stronger safety safeguards, parental controls and responsible AI features.

ChatGPT for Teens

ChatGPT for Teens has been introduced by OpenAI which is an exclusive ChatGPT platform tailored especially for teens, ages between 13 to 17. This particular experience is built around learning and growing the critical thinking skills of the young teens in addition to educating them on using artificial intelligence responsibly along with added safety features and controls for parents.

As per the announcement made by OpenAI, the user will be automatically assigned to the ChatGPT for Teens experience once their system recognizes the user as someone under the age of 18. A teen user who claims to be within the ages of 13 to 17 will also be automatically redirected to the new experience.

ChatGPT for Teens Puts Learning at the Centre

Among the key things that stand out when it comes to ChatGPT for Teens, there is a focus on education. The goal of OpenAI here is to make sure that students understand things rather than being provided with ready answers.

Among other features of this platform is the study mode, which provides students with an opportunity to go through questions and solve them step by step. This may be especially useful in case you need to learn something in depth rather than get the right answer quickly.

OpenAI will also be launching the Responsible Homework Reminder function. In such cases, ChatGPT would identify that a particular user is using the program only to do their homework quickly. Rather than doing the homework itself, ChatGPT would suggest the student to use the study mode and solve the problem on their own.

The other new addition from OpenAI is Study Hours. In this feature, teenagers or their parents can specify certain hours of the day during which the study mode will be on by default.

Stronger Safety Protections for Teenagers

Safety is yet another crucial aspect of the new experience. Age-appropriate safety features will be automatically activated for users under 18 years old, and those safety features will minimize exposure to harmful or age-inappropriate content.

The age-appropriate safety features target several sensitive topics, such as self-harm, eating disorders, violence, risky behaviors, and explicit content. According to OpenAI, those safety features are based on its principles for under-18 users as well as on recommendations of developmental science.

Moreover, the company will introduce some additional safety measures which are aimed at facilitating more healthy engagement with AI. Those safety measures include prompts for taking breaks as well as indications that users are engaging in conversations with an AI chatbot.

Furthermore, OpenAI states that its new safety features will ensure that ChatGPT does not use any romantic language or behavior in order to foster emotional dependency on ChatGPT. Sensitive image reminders and onboarding for teenagers are also being introduced by OpenAI.

Parents Get More Control Over ChatGPT Use

Parents are getting a more active participation in the usage of ChatGPT by teens from OpenAI. They have an opportunity to connect their accounts with their teenager's account for the ability to manage some controls and settings.

The controls are Quiet Hours, certain account settings, and limited safety notifications. All this is done with the aim to allow parents to see how their child uses ChatGPT and not make the experience totally restricted.

Also, OpenAI has made a special onboarding for teens and reminders regarding the dangers of sharing sensitive images. This is done in order to help the teenagers to be aware of the dangers and allow parents to set proper restrictions.

Nevertheless, OpenAI clearly states that these measures are not meant to take the place of the parents. They still have to speak to their kids about using AI responsibly and choose the right setting for themselves.

OpenAI Launches Parents' Guide in India

As part of the ChatGPT for Teens launch in India, OpenAI has now introduced a guidebook called Parents' Guide to Learning with ChatGPT in India that will help parents familiarize themselves with the newly launched teen experience while configuring parental controls and encouraging better habits when using AI at home.

Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy & Global Affairs, India at OpenAI has stressed the importance of the involvement of parents and educators in the light of children increasingly interacting with AI technologies. OpenAI hopes that parents and educators continue to stay involved while encouraging teens to be critical thinkers as well as setting appropriate age-based boundaries with respect to using AI.

As part of the initiative, OpenAI has also held Open Dialogues on Youth Safety and AI in India.

Designed to Help Students Beyond Homework

Even though education is one of its primary concerns, ChatGPT for Teens is not confined only to school tasks. According to OpenAI, teens are currently using AI in order to develop their skills and implement ideas beyond school, and this particular experience is supposed to aid in that and keep safety in mind.

The educational angle might prove to be quite helpful for those students who need some extra assistance with complicated topics out of school hours, as they will be able to study in Study Mode instead of asking their teachers or parents about each and every question.

Moreover, OpenAI is collaborating with CodeAI in order to help both students and educators to better understand AI and learn how to use the technology responsibly.

A More Age-Aware Version of ChatGPT

The release of ChatGPT for Teens is part of a larger trend in the way OpenAI deals with teens. Instead of viewing them as merely a subcategory of their general users, the company seems to be changing the product according to the learning and developmental needs of teens.

These extra security measures, parental controls, and learning features might make ChatGPT a better fit for teens that need AI help for their studies or to pick up new skills and create projects. That said, how effective these protective measures will be depends largely on how well the system will detect age in reality.

Parents now have several additional choices in terms of getting AI into their teenagers' lives through a safer platform. However, the supervision of the parents is still essential because, although safety features of AI could mitigate some of the potential dangers, they could not substitute a conversation between parents and teenagers regarding privacy, critical thinking and the responsible use of AI as well as chatbot information limitations.

Through the development of ChatGPT for Teens, it is evident that OpenAI tries to make AI assistance age-specific while motivating teenagers to become more effective learners instead of just using AI for obtaining quick answers. All of these aspects including Study Mode, homework reminders, Study Hours, parental controls and additional safety measures could make this move one of the most remarkable made by the company.
