OpenAI is giving ChatGPT Free users a major upgrade with unlimited text-based conversations and the new GPT-5.6 Luna model. The company is also introducing a Think button for Free and Go users, while Plus and Pro subscribers get GPT-5.6 Sol and a new thinking slider.

OpenAI is now planning to bring an update to ChatGPT Free that will be one of the biggest updates ever for those using it for regular conversations, writing, learning and ideating. According to reports, OpenAI has removed the standard message limitations for text conversations, so that users no longer have to worry about hitting a text message limit while using ChatGPT Free.
This particular update can be a game changer for those who regularly use ChatGPT throughout the day as they don't have to wait until the usage limit gets reset. Furthermore, the same advantage of unlimited text conversations is being offered to users of Go plan as well.
This update from OpenAI comes soon after ChatGPT managed to achieve another major feat as it became the first AI app to cross 1 billion users within a single week. Along with the unlimited text conversations, OpenAI is bringing some new AI models and capabilities to its Free, Go and Plus plans. Though the capabilities vary depending upon the subscription plan, the goal of OpenAI is to make ChatGPT better, accurate and versatile.
ChatGPT Free Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Text Messages
Probably the most significant change that will affect the Free ChatGPT service is the elimination of any limitations on text conversation. This means that a user will be able to ask questions, generate thoughts, write articles and learn in text-based conversations without interruptions associated with the traditional message limit.
This may be especially valuable for students, writers, professional users and even casual users who regularly use ChatGPT to complete various tasks throughout the day. Whether someone needs help with follow-up questions, writing an article, generating some ideas or understanding something complicated, he/she can continue his/her conversation without the text-message limitations.
It should be noted, however, that OpenAI does not remove all the limitations associated with the Free plan. This unlimited access concerns only text-based conversations. Such resource-consuming options as file uploading, picture uploading, voice conversations and image generation will have their limitations as well.
In other words, one will be able to have more freedom while chatting through text, but the ability to use other functions of ChatGPT will still depend on the limitations related to the user’s plan.
GPT-5.6 Luna Becomes the Default Model for Free and Go Users
In addition to having unlimited text chats, the company is also launching GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model for Free and Go users. What this implies is that there may not be a need for people to explicitly switch models when having their usual text chats.
It appears that GPT-5.6 Luna is seen as a better model compared to the GPT-5.5 one. It will give out consistent responses while remaining natural and fast at the same time. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Luna will be able to handle everything in the everyday life such as question-and-answer requests, explaining things, writing help, problem-solving, and many other things.
Having GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model will simplify the experience of using ChatGPT for people who are not familiar with all the available models on the platform. Instead of selecting a particular model for a particular query, they can just have a regular chat.
New Think Button
The other notable addition to come to the Free and Go tiers will be the new "Think" button. This new feature will be helpful for situations when a question needs more reasoning than a regular conversation.
Instead of instantly answering the tricky question, ChatGPT will have some extra time to figure out the solution and then provide an answer. This will be especially helpful for multi-step problems, complicated subjects, project planning, etc.
For instance, if the user wants to get information on a tricky subject or solve a problem that involves multiple steps, they can choose the "Think" button to give ChatGPT extra time to reason out the request.
This feature will allow users to signal to ChatGPT that the question needs more time. In case of a simple question, the user can go on with a regular conversation, whereas in case of a tricky request – use the reasoning option.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro Users Get GPT-5.6 Sol Upgrade
OpenAI is also updating its subscription models. The users of the ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans are getting the new GPT-5.6 Sol model that is intended to help the bot to improve its performance when completing various productive tasks.
As noted by OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol is a new model of the bot that is capable of performing better in question-answer tasks, web search, project planning, content generation, giving advice and supporting decision making.
At the same time, the company is also trying to make sure that the bots' responses are more concise and unambiguous. It can be especially helpful for those users who use ChatGPT for their productivity tasks and need concise answers without any explanation. It should be noted that the update involves only the GPT-5.6 Sol model and is not an update of the Codex and Work models.
Thinking Slider Gives Plus and Pro Users More Control
One of the more intriguing updates that the Plus and Pro users get is the new thinking slider. This tool will allow users to gain more control over the amount of reasoning ChatGPT does before answering the questions.
In case of a simple question, where speed matters more than extensive reasoning, the user can maintain the low thinking level and obtain an immediate answer. In case of a complex task, users can raise the thinking level and give ChatGPT more time to think about their request and give an answer.
This gives advanced users a chance to gain more control over the speed-reasoning trade-off. Instead of having the same level of reasoning for each request, users will be able to change it based on their needs.
Such an option may prove to be very useful for professionals, researchers and any other users switching from simple everyday tasks to complex ones.
OpenAI Claims GPT-5.6 Models Make Fewer Factual Errors
OpenAI is also focusing on improvements in terms of factual correctness of its new models. Based on the results of internal evaluation, GPT-5.6 Luna commits 62% less factual errors than GPT-5.5 Instant, while GPT-5.6 Sol decreases factual mistakes by 68% compared to its previous version.
It is worth noting that these statistics come from OpenAI's internal testing, which means that they have to be evaluated in terms of OpenAI's own evaluation system.
However, these statistics show one of the key focuses of OpenAI in terms of developing ChatGPT – improving reliability. In the case when AI assistants get more involved into different activities like research, writing, education, planning and even decision making, it becomes important to reduce incorrect information.
When Will the New ChatGPT Features Roll Out?
While the enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol model can already be used by ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, the rest of the upgrades for the Free and Go versions are due to start being rolled out next week.
The update should result in a number of key improvements for those who use the free version of ChatGPT, especially such features as unlimited text conversations, GPT-5.6 Luna model that will be set as default, and the Think button.
It is clear that for Free users, the whole package can be viewed as a major improvement, especially since unlimited text conversations eliminate one of the most frustrating aspects of using ChatGPT for free.
New updates by OpenAI demonstrate that the corporation is further developing the ChatGPT service, which is now becoming not just a chatbot based on AI but a comprehensive platform offering various tools to communicate with AI. The introduction of unlimited text chats for Free and Go customers, reasoning controls, and model upgrades for the paid versions makes ChatGPT a good choice for those looking for an AI assistant to help in many tasks both for private and business purposes.
The most obvious change for Free users will be the elimination of restrictions for text chat conversations. For Plus and Pro customers, more control over reasoning and responses of ChatGPT is expected.
The recent development is also connected to the increased competition in the field of AI assistants when companies try to improve their products not only in terms of AI capabilities but also user experience. With GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-5.6 Sol, the new Thinking button, and the thinking slider, OpenAI makes another step towards better AI conversations.
