Flipkart has confirmed the launch of its online food delivery service in India within the next few weeks. The Walmart-owned company will begin with a phased rollout before expanding nationwide, taking on Zomato and Swiggy.

Flipkart is making plans to venture into the fiercely contested online food delivery market in India. It has recently confirmed that its food delivery platform will go live in the coming weeks, thereby taking another leap beyond online shopping and quick commerce. The new launch is projected to position the company alongside Zomato and Swiggy in the market, which has seen tremendous growth in recent years.
It has been reported by Flipkart that the launch will not be made in a country-wide format immediately. The company plans on rolling out the platform in phases, as was done during the launch of the quick commerce platform, called Flipkart Minutes. The move will give the firm time to collect customer feedback and improve on the platform in general.
Flipkart Food Delivery Service
Concerning the future launch, Kalyan Krishnamurthy, who is the CEO of Flipkart Group, stated that the platform for the delivery of online food is soon to be launched. Instead of starting an all-India launch of the service, Flipkart decided to introduce it first for a select number of customers. This will allow them to learn more about customer preferences and challenges related to deliveries before the actual launch across the whole India.
As Mr. Krishnamurthy pointed out, Flipkart adheres to the principle of improvement of its product based on the actual feedback from customers. They managed to do so many times in the past. For instance, they successfully launched the Flipkart Minutes service. Following the same roadmap, Flipkart hopes to provide a seamless user experience from the start.
How Customers Will Be Able to Order Food
It has been officially stated by Flipkart that consumers would have two options for ordering food when the service is finally rolled out. Consumers can make an order through the existing Flipkart app itself without the need for any other separate app, if they currently make purchases through the app. Simultaneously, the company has come up with a dedicated food delivery app for ordering food from the restaurant.
Even though the arrival of the service has been declared by the company, there are certain facts that remain undisclosed yet. There is no information on what name will be used by the company for its new food delivery service and which city will host it for the first time.
ONDC Partnership Could Play a Key Role
According to reports, Flipkart is looking forward to integrating its food delivery system with the government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Although Flipkart has not clarified how the partnership will work, it may allow customers to get connected to a wider range of restaurants or sellers on account of the open digital commerce ecosystem.
In case the integration becomes successful, it will be able to distinguish itself from conventional food delivery systems due to the open ecosystem.
According to Flipkart, there is no point in entering a new market unless the organization offers something of value to its consumers. As per Kalyan Krishnamurthy, value does not lie in being cheaper; rather, the customer is looking for a total experience which entails having a variety of restaurants, deliveries, faster service, and smooth ordering processes.
The future plan for Flipkart seems to involve developing an excellent network of restaurants so that the users get access to some of the best local and national restaurant chains through the application. It is clear from here that Flipkart aims to compete with the rival organizations in terms of convenience and services too.
Competition in India's Food Delivery Market
Entry by Flipkart will change the face of the Indian online food delivery industry in a big way. Currently, the industry is dominated by Zomato and Swiggy, whereas food ordering apps backed by ONDC are slowly making progress with their networking strategy.
Flipkart comes with one clear edge because of its millions of existing customers who purchase products from Flipkart already. It has an opportunity to provide food ordering services along with other services in order to help people order groceries and food using one app.
Experts in the industry are of the view that competition will help consumers in the long run. The level of competition results in better discounts, more efficient delivery services, and more customer service. Moreover, restaurants may find new channels of communication with their customers.
In the event that the plan works for Flipkart, the Indian consumers can expect to be provided with yet another platform from which to order food online. It is clear that Flipkart has the advantage in terms of infrastructure, logistics skills, and customer base to be able to compete.
The implementation of the service will initially start off on a small scale but once it gains enough feedback, a nationwide roll out can follow. It is expected that the stiff competition will bring about improvements such as innovation and better prices.
Flipkart's official entrance into the business means that the upcoming period will see some of the most significant changes in the history of India's online food ordering business.
