God of War Laufey Release Date Officially Confirmed for PS5, Faye Takes Centre Stage in New Adventure

PlayStation has confirmed God of War Laufey will launch on February 16, 2026, exclusively for PS5. Faye becomes the playable protagonist, physical discs are confirmed, and Sony teases another Kratos game.

After lingering speculation, PlayStation has made the announcement for the God of War Laufey game to be set on February 16, 2026. At the God of War Laufey panel held at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the studio’s creative director, Cory Barlog, stated that the game will be exclusively available on PlayStation 5. This news is great for gamers holding their hopes of getting the game as some thought it will be released only later in the year.

PlayStation fans are now relieved enough to get the official release date as only a couple of months back, the company revealed an elaborate gameplay presentation that suggested God of War Laufey would not be released until later in 2026. However, fans can now add the title to their wish list although there has been no announcement from the company regarding the price, bonuses for pre-orders, or editions of the game.

Faye Becomes the Franchise's New Playable Hero

Perhaps the biggest change in God of War Laufey is that its main character is not Kratos this time. For the first time in series' history, Kratos will not be the main protagonist of a God of War game. Players will get to live though Laufey's experiences instead, the warrior who passed away and caused events of 2018's God of War.

The game continues a new chapter in the series with the story of Laufey in the afterlife created for the gods. Laufey interacts with both gods, who shaped Kratos' fate in the previous games and enemies.

Kratos Still Has an Important Role

Even though Kratos is not at the center of the attention, the fact that the Studio of Sony Santa Monica assured that the well-known Spartan warrior will be present in the narrative is thoroughly surprising.

In the 20-minute gameplay presentation, the opening shows Kratos and Atreus conducting the funeral of Faye, resembling the touching beginning of God of War (2018). As for the gameplay process, Kratos makes his appearance when he goes to rescue Faye from imprisonment.

Beside these moments, the Studio prefers not to discuss the participation of Kratos in those scenes since the timeline leads to God of War Ragnarök’s plot.

Physical PS5 Disc Edition Officially Confirmed

Long-time PlayStation enthusiasts are relieved after there was an announcement that God of War Laufey will get a complete physical release on the PlayStation 5 and would not only be shipped with a download code in the box.

This announcement comes in light of previous news by Sony which stated that it would discontinue production of its discs of PlayStation after 2028, thus leading many gamers to believe that the future first-party games will be digital. There were also rumors surfacing that God of War Laufey will either not be made physically or would be delayed until 2027.

Now, the studio has clarified the situation and put all such speculations to rest by confirming that neither of the situations will happen.

Another Kratos Game Is Already in Development

Comic-Con has also revealed details regarding the franchise’s future. Cory Barlog revealed that the new God of War featuring Kratos is in the development stage.

According to Barlog, the next game in the franchise will be the sequel to the story set in God of War Laufey. It appears that the story of Faye will play an important role in bridging the previous events and Kratos’ next chapter. Although no title or time frame was given, the announcement helps fans understand that Kratos still plays an important role in Sony Santa Monica’s plans.

Major Game Releases

God of War Laufey's arrival falls swiftly in a month packed with game releases. The game gets released on February 16 amidst numerous highly awaited titles.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is expected to launch on February 12 and right after that is Persona 4 Revival on February 18 along with Fable reboot on February 23 for Xbox. With so many blockbuster games launching within couple of weeks, the month looks to be exciting for gamers across the platforms.
