Google has introduced AI-powered image generation directly inside Google Search through AI Overviews. Powered by the new Nano Banana model, the feature lets users create custom images from simple text prompts without leaving Search, while Google Images also receives a redesigned interface with improved Collections support.

Once again, Google is making efforts towards turning Search smarter by adding AI-based image creation to Google Search. With the help of this tool, there is no need to browse through thousands of existing images on the web – users are able to generate completely new visuals by using text only. This innovation is incorporated into the new feature of AI Overviews by Google, an AI-powered search feature.
The whole idea is that of creating visuals quickly and effortlessly without any cost. For this reason, this feature uses Google's brand new Nano Banana image generation model. This innovation will come in handy for students who need images for their presentations, marketers who are working on social media visuals, and for anyone else who needs to use content.
Google Search Gets Built-In AI Image Generation
Over the years, Google Images has been the ultimate resource for finding pictures, illustrations, graphics, and artwork available on the sites of the World Wide Web. It is an extremely helpful tool, but there is one big drawback — sometimes the exact picture which you need is just not available on the web.
The recent update solves this issue by including AI-based picture generation within the Search function. If Search fails to find a picture matching your request, AI Overviews will offer to generate a picture out of thin air using your description.
There is no more need to play with the search criteria or use different AI generators, as now you only have to describe the picture which you want.
How to Generate AI Images in Google Search
Using the new feature is designed to be straightforward and requires only a few steps.
Step 1: Search for the image you need on Google as usual.
Step 2: If Google cannot find a suitable existing image, head to the AI Overviews section displayed in the search results.
Step 3: You'll see an option to generate a brand-new image. You can either use your original search query or refine it into a more descriptive prompt.
Step 4: Google's Nano Banana AI model processes your prompt and creates a completely original image based on your description.
Step 5: The generated image appears directly within Google Search, allowing you to continue browsing without opening another website or AI application.
The entire experience happens inside Search, making image creation significantly quicker and more convenient.
Powered by Google's Nano Banana AI Model
This is made possible by Google’s most recent image creation model, Nano Banana.
Nano Banana translates natural language description to completely new images that do not exist elsewhere but are created from scratch based on the user’s description.
As a result, it is possible for users to create illustrations that have never been created before and are thus especially useful when it comes to creative work, educational materials, presentations, marketing efforts, and social media content.
According to Google, the objective here is to assist users in creating visuals that precisely correspond with the ideas that they have in mind without having to go through hundreds of search results.
Why This Update Matters
The addition of AI image generation transforms Google Search from a discovery tool into a creative platform.
Previously, users often needed to switch between Google Search and dedicated AI image generators whenever they couldn't find the right visual. Now, that extra step disappears.
This improvement could save valuable time for professionals and everyday users alike.
The feature is expected to be particularly useful for:
Students creating assignments and presentations
Teachers preparing educational content
Marketers designing promotional graphics
Content creators producing blog and social media visuals
Designers searching for concept artwork
Small businesses creating branding materials
Website owners looking for unique illustrations
By integrating image creation directly into Search, Google simplifies the entire workflow.
AI Overviews Continue to Expand
Google has been consistently implementing various AI functionalities in its Search service for the last year, and AI Overviews have become some of the most significant breakthroughs that the company has made recently.
Initially designed for the purposes of summarizing search results with the help of AI technology, AI Overviews have been taking on a new interactive form.
Now, with the new update, not only will AI Overviews answer questions and summarize information but also create images when there are no visual materials available.
Thus, we see yet another step taken by Google towards its goal of making Search an AI assistant.
Google Images Is Also Getting a Major Redesign
In addition to using AI for creating images, Google has also decided to re-design the entire experience of using Google Images.
The new homepage will be much more dynamic, reacting to individual interests and browsing behaviors rather than showing just a selection of photos. Based on user interaction with various themes, the gallery will be constantly replenishing its content with more suitable images. The new interface should help save time by presenting more appropriate images to users.
Collections Become Easier to Access
Another innovation by Google that has been introduced to help the user sort out his saved images has been brought to light.
The present Google Collection feature, through which the user saves his images on searching Google Images, is getting easier to access now.
Collections will be placed in the form of tabs above the gallery of images, so the user can switch between the search and saved images easily without losing track. This will be very helpful for people who have many reference images.
Availability and Rollout
Google claims that the new AI image generation technology will start getting released over the course of the next few weeks.
The AI image generation service will initially be available in English and countries where the creation of AI images through AI Mode is possible. At this point, Google has not revealed any plans about making the feature available in other languages or countries.
In the meantime, the new Google Images homepage will be rolled out to US desktop users for now. One will have to sign in using their Google account.
Google has not shared any details about the international release date of the revamped Google Images homepage.
The integration of AI-generated images in Google Search showcases the bigger vision of the company, which aims at turning Search into an intelligent productivity space and not only a search engine.
Apart from helping users find existing information available online, Google makes it possible for them to create new data right within the Search interface.
Using AI-generated summaries, conversational searches, programming support, shopping features, and AI-generated images, Search transforms into a full-fledged AI space where the user does not have to move from one application to another.
As Google keeps expanding the use of AI Overviews and implementing cutting-edge technologies like Nano Banana, it is clear that the potential of Search is going to grow even further.
