What you need to Know
For sensitive communication, encryption, transparency, and no data retention are key.
Messages stored on servers (not end-to-end encrypted) can be accessed by the service provider.
Minimal data collection means higher privacy and less chance of leaks or misuse.
Signal is the most transparent, being open-source and non-profit.
In the hyper-connected world of today, messaging apps are the lifelines to our communication. From sharing personal photos to coordinating weekend getaways to even discussing confidential work matters, we rely on apps like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram to preserve the confidentiality of our conversations. How secure are these platforms, though? Can we reliably trust them with our information?
At AndroBranch, we've long held your privacy and security paramount be it uncovering malware in the guise of cleaner apps or cautioning against suspicious Android permissions. So here's a breakdown of the security promises vs. reality of the big three messaging apps: WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram.
The Good
WhatsApp employs end-to-end encryption (E2EE) as a default, courtesy of the Signal Protocol (the same protocol used by Signal). In other words, only the receiver and sender can read the messages. Not even WhatsApp or its parent company, Meta (Facebook) can view your chats.
What's Not-So-Good
Metadata: Although your chats are encrypted, WhatsApp still gathers who you converse with, how frequently, and when i.e., your metadata.
Cloud Backups: Should your messages be stored on Google Drive or iCloud, those backups are not end-to-end encrypted (although recent updates have begun to rectify this).
Parent Company Concerns: Meta's record of user privacy is questionable at best. WhatsApp forwards user data to other Meta services in order to use them for "advertising and analytics purposes," which is a concern for privacy extremists.
Verdict: Suitable for general purposes, but don't anticipate total anonymity.
The Good
Signal is the pin-up boy of safe messaging. It's open-source, not-for-profit, and gathers almost zero data. Everything you messages to voice/video calls and even attachments is safeguarded with robust E2EE.
No Ads, No Trackers: Signal doesn't depend on adverts or user monetization of data.
No Metadata: It's built to cache as little data as possible even your contacts and groups are shielded using sophisticated methods.
Open Source: Anyone can review the code for flaws. This openness increases trust.
Any Drawbacks?
Needs your phone number for registration (although this could soon change).
Features slightly less than WhatsApp or Telegram but Signal does things intentionally with fewer features.
Verdict: If privacy is your utmost concern, Signal is your best choice.
The Good
Telegram is renowned for its cloud-based messaging, large group sizes, and features galore such as bots, channels, and file sharing.
Secret Chats: Telegram does have end-to-end encryption but only in "Secret Chats."
Multi-device Support: With cloud syncing, you can easily access your chats on any device.
The Not-So-Good
No E2EE by Default: Ordinary chats on Telegram are only encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and not end-to-end. That is, Telegram has access to your messages.
Proprietary Protocol: Telegram employs its own MTProto encryption protocol, which is less widely trusted and tested compared to Signal's.
Data Storage: Messages are stored on Telegram's servers unless you're using Secret Chats.
Verdict: Excellent on features and usability, but don't count on it for super private chats.
Feature / App | Signal | Telegram | |
---|---|---|---|
End-to-End Encryption | ✅ Default | ✅ Default | ❌ Only in Secret Chats |
Metadata Logging | 📊 Yes | 🚫 No | 📊 Yes |
Cloud Backup | ☁️ Risky | 🚫 No backups | ☁️ Default |
Open Source | 🔍 Partially | ✅ Fully | ❌ Not fully |
Parent Company | 🏢 Meta | ❤️ Non-Profit | 🏢 Private |
Selecting the appropriate chat app is a matter of getting the right mix of privacy, functionality, and ease. If you're an intermittent user chatting with buddies, WhatsApp is sufficient. But for more sensitive conversations, we strongly suggest using Signal. Telegram is playful and full-featured, but employ Secret Chats for anything you don't want spied upon.
And as ever don't take the app's word for it. Update your device, steer clear of dodgy links, and be careful what you post.
