Apple’s first foldable iPhone has arrived in India with a shocking Rs 2,99,900 starting price. Here’s a closer look at the iPhone Duo price, EMI costs, iPhone 18 Pro pricing and whether buying it makes financial sense.

The price boundaries of iPhones in India have officially been crossed by Apple. In a span of years during which the prices of its flagships were more or less fixed, Apple has decided to give way to several steep hikes in price for the entire range of its models with the latest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max available at Rs 30,000 more than the starting price of their respective iPhone 17 Pro models. However, the real surprise comes from the first ever foldable iPhone from the Cupertino based brand, iPhone Duo that has an insane price tag of Rs 2,99,900 in India.

This makes the iPhone Duo the very first iPhone model that crosses the barrier of Rs 3 lakhs. While there is no doubt that the company will receive good publicity on the day of launch, it is the cost of the iPhone if bought through EMI that adds flavor to it.

iPhone Duo India Price Starts at Rs 2,99,900

Apple's first foldable iPhone is available in four storage configurations in India. The base 256GB model costs Rs 2,99,900, while buyers who need more storage can spend up to Rs 4,49,900 for the 2TB version.

The price is significantly higher than the price of the phone in the US market. For instance, the price of the iPhone Duo in the US market begins at $1,999, which amounts to approximately Rs 1.90 lakh based on current exchange rates. This translates into more than Rs 1 lakh difference in prices.

While import taxes, GST, and the pricing strategy of Apple in India contribute to this price gap, it stands out especially because the phone has been priced as an ultra-premium product.

As a point of reference, the iPhone Duo is priced at almost double the cost of the iPhone 18 Pro and thrice the new cost of the iPhone 17.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Prices

The price increase isn't limited to Apple's new foldable. The iPhone 18 Pro now starts at Rs 1,64,900 for 256GB, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900.

Both models are offered with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options.

The increase is evident when compared to launch prices in the previous year. While the iPhone 17 Pro launched at a price of Rs 1,34,900, the iPhone 17 Pro Max launched at Rs 1,49,900. That is, both new Pro versions are Rs 30,000 higher at the bottom end.

As far as the top end is concerned, the difference is even more stark. While the 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max comes at Rs 3,29,900, the 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max was available at launch at a price of Rs 2,29,900.

Moreover, Apple has also discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max versions. However, remaining stocks in the retail sector may become highly valuable for potential buyers if any significant discount is offered by the retailers.

Apple Has Increased Prices of Older iPhones Too

Perhaps the more surprising part of Apple's pricing strategy is that several older models have also become significantly more expensive.

However, the iPhone 17 has been hiked by Rs 17,000 and now its cost is just Rs 100 shy of Rs 1 lakh psychological barrier. The iPhone Air has witnessed the maximum hike, as its price has been increased by Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,49,900.

The 2024 model of the iPhone 16 is Rs 20,000 more expensive and costs Rs 89,900 while the iPhone 17e has witnessed an increase of Rs 15,000 to reach Rs 79,900.

These hikes will bring about a drastic difference in value propositions of the current line of iPhones from Apple. With the price of Rs 1,49,900, iPhone Air is now Rs 15,000 cheaper than the iPhone 18 Pro. From the point of view of a person who is more concerned about performance and cameras, this price difference can be insignificant.

An even more difficult task is being presented to the iPhone 17 at its price level of Rs 99,900. Consumers looking at this price level have alternatives like older models of iPhones or smartphones by Samsung and Google at reduced prices.

This is true even for the iPhone 16. Rather than going by the official price of Rs 89,900 quoted by Apple, consumers would do well to compare prices among retailers.

When Does the iPhone Duo Go on Sale in India?

Apple will commence taking advance orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max from September 12, with deliveries starting from September 18.

There will also be huge demand for the iPhone Duo because of its out-of-the-world pricing. Apple always draws huge crowds whenever a new iPhone release is announced, but the foldable phone's unique design adds an additional incentive.

But for a lot of people, it would be impractical to cough up close to Rs 3 lakhs upfront. This is where the company's EMI options come in handy.

However, as per the EMI calculator provided by Apple, there are different schemes available for the buyers, according to which they can easily distribute the costs of the Rs 2,99,900 iPhone Duo.

In terms of shorter durations, there are options available of three months and six months with monthly payments of approximately Rs 97,633 and Rs 48,817 respectively, depending on the type of credit card.

After six months, however, the calculations turn out to be unappealing. Starting from nine months, there is the interest rate that is about 14 to 15 percent on an annual basis. The perceived savings can be explained mainly because of a Rs 7,000 cashback instead of interest.

The most interesting feature is presented in the 24 month option, because the monthly installment will be around Rs 14,000 and this amount looks much easier than Rs 3 lakh as an upfront installment.

However, when we look at the whole amount in two years period, we get about Rs 3,40,842. This amount is around Rs 41,000 higher than Rs 2,99,900 price tag of the phone. It means that Rs 14,000 monthly installment looks much more affordable, but there is no any real savings in that case.

Is iPhone Duo EMI Actually Worth It?

Here's where things get really interesting when it comes to Apple's pricing strategy.

A smartphone worth Rs 2,99,900 is already a massive investment for a majority of Indian consumers. However, when the total cost of ownership becomes monthly EMIs, it becomes psychologically easier to cope with but the actual amount isn't reduced by any stretch of imagination.

In case you can easily buy the iPhone Duo, you wouldn't incur any interest charge. Similarly, No Cost EMI at a short tenure also makes sense if the monthly instalments are easy to manage for you along with the cashback terms being favorable for you. However, longer tenures can be difficult to rationalize.

The monthly installment of around Rs 14,000 for two years sounds doable enough but when you pay a total of Rs 3,40,842 at the end of tenure, you're paying thousands of rupees in excess to the actual price of the phone.

It is not just another iPhone that comes at a high cost. This product belongs to a totally different category than any other product from Apple, and hence there is no precedent of a foldable iPhone from Apple against which the cost of the iPhone Duo can be measured by the Indian buyer.

It is already an ultra-premium product at the $1,999 price tag in US dollars. However, the difference becomes even more significant when it costs Rs 2,99,900 in India.

It is quite evident that Apple hopes to sell the product despite charging an extremely high price for it simply due to its foldable feature and hardware specifications. Success will, however, depend on how the device fares on real-life conditions. Ultimately, it is the reviews that will decide whether the price tag is justified by the folding mechanism experience.

For now, however, the figures cannot be ignored.

The iPhone Duo has a starting price of Rs 2,99,900. The iPhone Duo with 2TB storage has an even higher price of Rs 4,49,900. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a price of Rs 3,29,900. The older iPhones manufactured by Apple have seen price increments as well.

Financing the base Duo model over a period of 24 months can cost you approximately Rs 3.41 lakh. Now, the question is not just about being able to pay for the newest iPhone; it's about being willing to pay such a high price for the privilege of owning Apple's first folding phone.
