Reliance Jio, the top telecom and broadband company in India, has launched its new digital breakthrough JioPC, a virtual desktop experience available only on the Jio Set-Top Box. Through this launch, Jio seeks to transform the way one engages with productivity, learning, and digital workplaces right within their home lounges. JioPC converts your television into a functional desktop PC by streaming a Linux-based virtual machine with high-speed internet connectivity and productivity software.
JioPC is a virtual desktop service run by the cloud that provides a hassle-free computing experience via the Jio Set-Top Box, accessible to all JioFiber and AirFiber subscribers. In contrast to PCs, JioPC doesn't use local computing power. Instead, it streams a virtual desktop with high specifications from the cloud removing the cost of pricey hardware.
With 4 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) at 2.45 GHz, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, the JioPC boots Ubuntu Linux OS with the Cinnamon desktop environment, offering a seamless and home-like user experience. This new configuration enables cloud-based productivity, file handling, and web surfing without having to buy a physical desktop.
The virtual desktop is more than adequate for most day-to-day activities. In practical testing, the JioPC virtual machine was driven by an Intel Xeon Platinum 8370C processor clocked at 2.80 GHz, along with 7.8GB of RAM and 76.5GB of available storage. At internal speed tests conducted using Fast.com, the desktop posted a speed of 650 Mbps, which guarantees seamless browsing, uploads, and app usage.
One of the features that mark JioPC as different is the user-friendly and familiar interface. With a Windows-like interface, including a start menu and taskbar, even new users find it easy to use. The desktop has must-have applications including Google Chrome, LibreOffice, GIMP, and Sublime Text, as well as direct access to web apps such as OneDrive, Google Drive, YouTube, and ChatGPT.
For general users and students, JioPC also comes with interesting games like Chess, 2048, Mines, Reversi, Five or More, Lights Off, and Sudoku. And for power users, the integrated Software Center makes installing more Linux-compatible software a breeze, making it even more flexible.
While JioPC does shine in productivity-related activities and web surfing, there are some snags. In video playback tests using both YouTube and local content, a bit of lag was witnessed. The problem appears to be due to a lack of hardware acceleration or graphics driver support, something which Jio is likely to fix prior to the official launch.
Also not supported currently are external peripherals such as webcams and printers. This notwithstanding, Jio has assured that such functionality will be included in future releases. Albeit these initial limitations, the fundamental offerings of the system render it a good choice for the end user who needs an affordable computing solution.
JioPC needs to be actively connected to the internet in order to stream the virtual desktop, and while most functionality on the JioPC does not use broadband data, file transfers from USB external devices to the virtual desktop do incur data usage.
One of the biggest benefits of JioPC is cloud-based data protection. In the event that a user's set-top box is lost or replaced, all data and settings are left untouched, as nothing is locally stored. Jio preserves user data safely and securely for up to 90 days once a subscription has expired. Data will then be deleted permanently unless the subscription is resumed.
JioPC is best suited for home users, students, and professionals who need basic computing functionalities without investing in an expensive desktop or laptop. It’s ideal for:
Students doing online learning or research
Remote workers needing access to cloud-based tools
Families who want shared access to a PC on the TV
Casual users who need lightweight desktop access for browsing or productivity
For power users, Jio plans to introduce upgraded virtual machines with more performance capabilities once the service is fully rolled out.
Setting up JioPC is extremely easy for any Jio Set-Top Box user. Follow these steps:
Turn on your TV connected to the Jio Set-Top Box. Navigate to the Apps section and select JioPC.
Use the available USB ports on the set-top box to connect your keyboard and mouse, or pair wireless devices via Bluetooth.
Once launched, the app will automatically fetch your Jio account details. Click Continue to proceed.
You will now see your virtual PC specifications along with a “Launch Now” button. Click it to begin using JioPC instantly.
If your internet connection drops, you have 15 minutes of idle time to reconnect. Beyond this, the session will end, and any unsaved work will be lost.
Jio is offering a free three-month trial to all eligible JioFiber and AirFiber customers. To activate the free trial:
Launch the JioPC app on your Jio Set-Top Box
Complete the on-screen account setup
Activate your free trial and start using JioPC
Once the trial expires, users will need to purchase a subscription to continue using the service. Jio has not yet announced the official pricing. However, the company ensures that if the subscription expires, your data will be preserved for 90 days, giving ample time to renew. After this period, all data will be permanently erased.
If you face any setup or usage issues, you can simply send a WhatsApp message with the keyword “JioPC” to +91 80104 34343 for assistance.
JioPC is a revolutionary product in India's digital landscape, particularly for users without access to personal computing hardware. With its cloud-based model, Linux-based operating system, must-have apps, and intuitive interface, JioPC provides remarkable value to students, families, and professionals alike.
Though there remain a few areas of technical refinement such as video playback and support for peripherals the underlying system is quick, user-friendly, and secure. As Jio further improves its offer, JioPC has the potential to become the most user-friendly desktop option in the nation.
