Meizu 22 Set to Feature World’s Thinnest Bezels, Marks End of Meizu’s Smartphone Era

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu is gearing up to launch its next flagship smartphone, the Meizu 22, which will turn heads with the world's thinnest display bezels ever used on a smartphone. On an official teaser posted on China's popular microblogging site Weibo, Meizu announced that its upcoming Meizu 22 will feature an industry-first 1.2mm bezel thickness, the most radical departures of smartphone design and engineering to date.

Meizu 22: A Bezel-less Display Like Never Before

The official teaser emphasizes the tremendous efforts of Meizu's research and development (R&D) team in overcoming monumental challenges to achieve such an ultra-thin bezel design. Meizu asserts that the team innovated a self-researched LIPO process, using cutting-edge display technology and an extremely complex six-layer panel process to achieve this feat. In spite of an extremely high defective production ratio in the trial stage, the company triumphantly announced the realization of the "narrowest white panel process" and the world's thinnest "fourth-class white border.

This ambitious innovation is a far cry from its predecessor, the Meizu 21, which debuted in November 2023. The Meizu 21 already wowed tech fans with its 6.55-inch Full HD+ screen (1,080x2,340 pixels), 120Hz refresh rate, up to 1,100 nits peak brightness, and 1.74mm skinny bezels. The Meizu 22 strives to take these benchmarks even higher, providing a smoother, near-bezel-less viewing experience, perfect for heavy media viewing and gaming.

Hardware and Performance Expectations

Though Meizu has not officially announced the complete specifications of the Meizu 22 as yet, industry insiders believe that the phone will retain some of the Meizu 21's premium hardware. The earlier phone came equipped with a robust Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, 12GB of RAM, and the Adreno 750 GPU, promising enhanced performance for multitasking, gaming, and heavy-duty applications.

With Meizu's recent strategy change, the Meizu 22 will probably be the epitome of the company's smartphone prowess, blending bleeding-edge display technology with solid hardware to provide a high-end experience.

Meizu's Departure from Android Smartphones

In an unexpected industry development earlier in February 2024, Meizu revealed that it would be leaving the Android smartphone market. According to the Chinese technology company, it would be concentrating all its efforts towards artificial intelligence (AI), investing efforts in creating sophisticated software and hardware solutions. This strategic shift implies that the Meizu 22 will be the final smartphone to carry the Meizu brand name.

This revelation surprised many as Meizu had been a steady performer in the mid-range and flagship smartphone markets, particularly in China. The intensifying competition and shifting market forces do seem to have encouraged Meizu to concentrate its resources on AI innovations, where the company believes has more potential in the long term.

When Will the Meizu 22 Launch?

While Meizu has already previewed the design and significant display innovation, the precise release date of the Meizu 22 is not public. Analysts anticipate the formal launch will occur within the near future, potentially within the next quarter, from the intense promotional activity on Weibo. Considering the anticipated stature of the smartphone as the company's last flagship release, buzz among tech consumers and Meizu die-hards remains strong.

The Meizu 22 is set to be an extraordinary product that sets the boundaries of smartphone display technology. Its razor-thin bezels and premium specifications make it a worthy swan song for Meizu's time in the smartphone industry. As the world waits for the official announcement, there is no doubt that Meizu is making its mark by showcasing a stunning work of engineering before it starts its new journey into the industry of artificial intelligence.
