Meta Unveils Open AI Models as Mark Zuckerberg Warns Against Concentrated AI Power

Meta has introduced new AI models Muse Glimmer and Muse Spark 1.2 while Mark Zuckerberg warns that concentrating advanced AI power among a few companies or governments could create serious risks.

Meta Platforms Inc. has released a series of AI models that will be open to developers to use and improve on, with Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg making a convincing case for having advanced artificial intelligence accessible to everyone and not concentrating their power within a few tech giants, governments, or organizations.
On Monday, Meta announced Muse Glimmer, which is an open-source lightweight AI model that can be used on personal computers and is released under a permissive license. On top of the lightweight version, Meta also announced that developers will be given access to a much more powerful Muse Spark 1.2, continuing Meta's efforts to provide more AI models outside the company's product portfolio.
Meta's move follows a heated competition in the AI industry, where firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google continue working on better AI models and releasing them. Despite being one of the biggest champions of open source AI models, Meta has been under pressure lately to compete with some of the more restrictive tech companies.
Meta Wants AI Development to Remain Open
Zuckerberg took the opportunity to make it clear that Meta has always maintained the position that superior AI technology should never be controlled by a select few institutions. The CEO has written an extensive essay on the issue of AI and why he thinks that open-source development may be able to spread the advantages of artificial intelligence.
As Zuckerberg explains, it is not just the degree of sophistication that advanced AI technology will achieve in the future that we have to be concerned about, but who will control such power. In his opinion, if at all super intelligence emerges out of the advancement of AI technology, then the power equation created by the ownership of such intelligence may end up working against the interests of common men.

Muse Glimmer Brings Meta's AI to Personal Computers
One of the most interesting components of the announcement is Muse Glimmer, which Meta calls a lightweight AI model which works on personal computers.

Zuckerberg Takes Aim at Centralized AI Development
Though Zuckerberg does not specify which competitors he was talking about, it is safe to say that his essay draws a distinction between the Meta’s position in this matter and the position of companies working on developing AI with more closed strategies.
Specifically, Zuckerberg points out that the majority of AI labs concentrate their efforts on creating AI systems for commercial and government purposes. If that happens, the benefits and potential influence of AI will be confined only to big players and will not reach individuals.

Meta's recent announcement is not just about the release of another two AI models but also a way for the company to strengthen its overall case that open AI will be able to serve as an alternative to the ever-growing centralization of AI development.
The move could allow independent developers, researchers, and smaller companies to conduct their own experiments with AI without the need to create a whole new model.
