Mivi Smartphone Set to Challenge India’s Budget 5G Market With Snapdragon Chip

Mivi is getting ready to release its first phone in India, aimed at budget users, with a Snapdragon chip, 5G capabilities, and an estimated cost below Rs. 15,000. The device has already been shown off on Flipkart.

Mivi Smartphone

The Indian budget segment of smartphones is going to witness a wave of competition from some well-known consumer brands as they try out new segments other than what they are currently involved in. The latest brand which seems poised to enter the space is Mivi, an audio brand in India known for its cheaply available earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, and soundbars. As per sources, Mivi is going to launch its very first smartphone in India that will target customers looking for 5G connectivity but below the Rs 15,000 mark.

It has been disclosed that Mivi’s new smartphone is going to be sold below the Rs 15,000 mark, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor being used as the chipset in it. The chip has been touted by the company as one of the selling points of the phone. However, the chipset may not be the only thing that Mivi should consider if it wants to compete with the existing smartphone brands.

Mivi Smartphone Teased on Flipkart

Mivi has already shown a teaser of the upcoming smartphone on the Flipkart platform. The teaser indicates that it will come with a green color choice, together with a flat back panel and rounded edges, which shows a simple yet elegant design of the device. It is set to be available for purchase via Flipkart, although Mivi has not announced its release date, features, model, and price yet.

Its entry into the smartphone market takes place amid the time when the segment below Rs 15,000 is going through some transformational developments. Mivi seems to be targeting users interested in capable hardware and 5G connectivity, although fewer such devices are currently being offered by the leading players in the smartphone segment.

Snapdragon Chip

The use of Snapdragon chip will perhaps be the main talking point about the new phone from Mivi. The company says that their upcoming phone will be the only one in its price range with a Snapdragon chipset installed, but there is no information available yet about which Snapdragon chip it will be.

While the inclusion of a Snapdragon processor in their phones might appeal to performance-oriented buyers for Mivi, the chipset in itself will not make or break the success of the phone. There are many other elements such as software optimization, cameras, battery life, charging speeds, and future software updates that will play an important role in the budget market.

For Mivi, it will be essential to prove that their phone will offer consistent daily performance and not just a marketing buzzword. The pricing of the phone will be equally crucial, especially if they aim to compete with brands having established themselves in the minds of Indian consumers in the budget segment.

From Audio Products to Smartphones

Mivi has made its name in India mainly due to cheap audio devices. The range comprises true wireless stereo earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars and also some AI-enabled gadgets. Hence, the entry of the company into the market of smartphones would constitute a very significant diversification move for Mivi, making it operate in one of the most fiercely contested consumer electronics segments in India.

Indeed, the company seems to have bolstered its smartphone plans by introducing experience from the industry into the company. Mivi apparently managed to hire Himanshu Tandon, who has previously been associated with POCO and CMF by Nothing. Himanshu's experience in the smartphone industry could help Mivi formulate its strategy in the new segment.

Mivi Enters at an Interesting Time

Mivi’s launch of its first smartphone in the market happens at a point in time where there are other newer brands or even old brands trying to find their way in the low-cost smartphone space in India. Fire-Boltt has already launched its smartphones into the market via the Boltt line-up of smartphones and Ai+ has come up with its entry in the category as well. Meanwhile, Micromax and Philips have plans to get back to action by launching smartphones in the Indian market.

In addition, there have been bigger players like Redmi, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO and Vivo that have moved into higher value categories, giving room to newer brands to go after customers willing to purchase feature-packed smartphones under Rs 15,000.

Moreover, the economics of budget smartphones have become tough. Higher costs of RAM and storage are putting more pressure on the brands, making it difficult for established players to offer extremely low-cost smartphones in entry level and affordable categories.

A Mivi smartphone would then come at a good time. A phone equipped with a Snapdragon chipset, 5G capability, and costing under Rs. 15,000 could make the gadget appealing to consumers who want a choice different from the available ones. But beyond just offering a compelling hardware configuration, the company will have to do more to create a good reputation in the smartphone segment.

Availability of quality after-sales services, optimised software, good cameras, battery and performance will determine if people would consider opting for Mivi against existing gadgets. The company's existing reputation in consumer electronics might give it some leverage, but the smartphone category is very challenging.

For now, however, there is still much that Mivi has been keeping under wraps. For instance, it is still not known which Snapdragon chipset will be used in the device, how large the display size is, what is the configuration of the cameras, the battery capacity, the type of charging and which version of the software and pricing will be offered for it. Nonetheless, given that the teaser has already appeared on Flipkart, more information may be unveiled soon.
