Digital payments and UPI transactions are growing rapidly in India, leading to a rise in queries and disputes, and FiMI was created to address this. NPCI has launched a new AI-powered system, FiMI, to simplify and improve online transactions.

FiMI is a small language model developed in-house by NPCI, specifically focused on India's digital payments ecosystem. It was unveiled at the ongoing India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. Unlike typical AI tools, it is trained on payment-related data and understands how UPI works, the reasons for transaction failures, and complaint resolution. Accuracy, consistency, and correct responses are crucial in digital payment systems, so FiMI aims to address these issues.
Now, let's understand how FiMI is helpful for UPI users. Users will find it within the UPI Help Assistant. Users will be able to ask questions in simple language. It will provide step-by-step guidance for issues like failed payments, delays, and chargebacks. Now, users will no longer need to call customer care or search through lengthy menus. FiMI is currently available in Hindi, English, Telugu, and Bengali, and NPCI plans to add more Indian languages over the next 6–8 months. This means you'll get help in your own language.
As digital payments grow, disputes and service requests are also increasing. FiMI aims to handle these issues on a large scale and reduce the pressure on the support system. It will not only answer questions but also guide users through the correct procedures as per the regulations.
NPCI has also released a technical paper detailing FiMI's functionality and development process. Its purpose is to promote responsible AI use and transparency. The organization is continuously working to improve the model's performance and language coverage.
