OpenAI GPT-5-Codex Rolls Out in Public Preview for GitHub Copilot Users

OpenAI has formally begun deploying its GPT-5-Codex model in public preview for GitHub Copilot subscribers. This advanced new AI coding companion is now supported on several plans, Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise, representing a quantum leap in AI-powered programming. Developers on Visual Studio Code (VS Code) can now leverage GPT-5-Codex starting with version 1.104.1, where the model is simply selectable right from the Copilot Chat picker.

OpenAI GPT-5-Codex

The GPT-5-Codex launch offers more sophisticated natural language comprehension, enhanced code generation, and more elaborate contextual reasoning than previous versions. With its new features, developers get even faster and more precise coding hints and debugging assistance. This enhancement not only simplifies development processes but also facilitates collaboration in large projects.

GitHub Copilot subscribers can avail GPT-5-Codex based on their plan:

  • Pro and Pro+ users: They can simply turn the model on through the model picker within VS Code.

  • Business and Enterprise users: Administrators must turn on the GPT-5-Codex policy to enable the model for use across teams.

This tier-based activation provides organizations with the control they need over access based on their policies while still enabling individual developers to experiment with the model in actual coding environments.

GPT-5-Codex follows on from the success of earlier Codex models with:

  • More intelligent code completions with enhanced programming language and framework understanding.

  • Contextual guidance that considers larger project architectures.

  • Native integration with GitHub Copilot's current functionality, allowing for pain-free adoption by existing users.

  • Enterprise-class flexibility, allowing administrators to control access by teams and departments.

For coders, this translates to less time devoted to writing repetitive code and more time spent on imagination, problem-solving, and creating quality software.

The public preview of GPT-5-Codex in GitHub Copilot signals OpenAI’s commitment to making AI coding assistants more powerful and widely accessible. With its integration into VS Code 1.104.1, this rollout gives developers early access to the next generation of AI-driven coding support. As OpenAI and GitHub refine the model further, users can expect even more advanced features in the near future.
