OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its new flagship AI model that marks the beginning of a new era for ChatGPT. Released on Thursday, GPT-5 is being called OpenAI’s first unified model, combining the powerful reasoning capabilities of its o-series models with the quick and interactive style of the traditional GPT series. This groundbreaking release not only advances ChatGPT’s abilities but also reflects OpenAI’s broader ambition to create AI agents systems capable of completing real-world tasks on behalf of users, rather than just answering questions.

Unlike GPT-4, which was already known for delivering intelligent responses across a wide range of topics, GPT-5 takes a giant leap forward. It is now able to create complete software programs, schedule user calendars, compile comprehensive research briefs, and address sophisticated problem-solving all without users having to find their way through complex settings. With its new real-time router, GPT-5 can now determine automatically whether to respond with lightning speed or pause for a while to "think" out more complicated queries, delivering the best possible answer most relevant and accurate to users.
A Major Milestone in the Quest for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
In a press conference, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called GPT-5 "the best model in the world" and a critical milestone on the way to creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) AI that is able to perform most economically valuable work better than a human. Altman underlined that "having something like GPT-5 would have been unimaginable at any point in the past in human history.
Effective immediately, GPT-5 is the default model for all free ChatGPT users, an action OpenAI states is intended to democratize the availability of powerful AI. This is the first time free-tier consumers have the ability to utilize an AI model with deep reasoning powers, once held back from free users by paid subscriptions. OpenAI VP of ChatGPT Nick Turley shared that this action is part of the company's goal to make AI benefits available to as many individuals as possible.
With ChatGPT now serving over 700 million users every week nearly 10% of the world’s population GPT-5 is expected to have a massive global impact. Its release is being closely watched by Big Tech companies, Wall Street investors, and technology regulators as a bellwether for AI’s rapid progress.
GPT-5’s Competitive Edge Over Rivals
OpenAI asserts that GPT-5 is superior to other top AI models by Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Elon Musk's xAI in a number of important benchmarks notably in software application development and health accuracy.
Among the most impressive features is its "vibe coding" capability developing entire software programs from absolute scratch. On the SWE-bench Verified benchmark, GPT-5 achieved 74.9%, marginally better than Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1 (74.5%) and well beyond Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro (59.6%).
In the GPQA Diamond exam for PhD-level science queries, GPT-5 Pro scored a remarkable 89.4%, beating Claude Opus 4.1 (80.9%) and Grok 4 Heavy (88.9%). It also performed exceptionally well in HealthBench Hard Hallucinations, where it produced false statements a mere 1.6% of the time, a drastic fall from that of GPT-4o (12.9%) and o3 (15.8%).
Fewer Hallucinations and Enhanced Safety
One of the largest considerations in AI has been hallucinations — when a model generates false information confidently. GPT-5 demonstrates a huge reduction here, with a 4.8% hallucination rate, versus GPT-4o's 20.6% and o3's 22%. This translates to users being able to anticipate more accurate, solid, and reliable responses.
OpenAI’s safety research lead Alex Beutel confirmed that GPT-5 is also less deceptive than previous models and better at identifying malicious requests, while still being helpful to harmless user queries. This makes the AI not just smarter, but also more transparent and trustworthy.
Upgrades for ChatGPT Users and Developers
In addition to GPT-5's launch, OpenAI has also introduced new features of personalization for ChatGPT. Users can now select from four different personalities Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd to suit their preferred tone.
For developers, GPT-5 will be offered in the OpenAI API in three sizes gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano with fine control over reasoning time and verbosity. Its price begins at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
Higher-tier ChatGPT members ($20/month) are offered increased usage, while Pro members ($200/month) have unlimited access to GPT-5 and the higher-end GPT-5 Pro model. Enterprise customers will be given GPT-5 as their standard model next week.
A New Gold Standard of AI Performance
The announcement of GPT-5 follows immediately after OpenAI launched gpt-oss, an open-weight reasoning model at no cost. Whereas gpt-oss was practically as powerful as earlier leading models such as o3, GPT-5 is creating a new standard in some areas, particularly in coding, scientific reasoning, and medical guidance.
Nonetheless, OpenAI admits that GPT-5 performs on a par with other leading AI systems in some respects, and its practical influence will be assessed based on how developers and customers end up utilizing it. In any case, GPT-5 is certainly a significant milestone in the AI competition, and its broad availability including to non-paying users heralds a more universal future for advanced AI technology.
GPT-5 is not merely an upgrade it's a redefinition of what can constitute an AI assistant. With enhanced accuracy, fewer hallucinations, better reasoning, and an emphasis on real-world task completion, it is closer to being an actual AI agent instead of a chatbot. Whether you’re a developer, researcher, business owner, or casual user, GPT-5’s capabilities offer a glimpse into the next stage of AI evolution one where machines don’t just answer questions but actively help get things done.
