OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, calling it the world’s most intelligent AI model, with advanced capabilities in coding, science, cybersecurity and autonomous tasks.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has unveiled GPT-6 Astra, its new generation of AI systems, saying it is the best model ever created by the firm. OpenAI said the AI system is the "most intelligent" in the world and has been created for performing a wider range of sophisticated functions than previous AI models. The system will be used in such spheres as software engineering, science, cybersecurity, financial modeling and analysis, as well as in routine computer-based tasks like tax filing and form-filling.
GPT-6 Astra, as described by OpenAI president Greg Brockman at a press conference, represents a "generational leap in capability." Besides, the company is touting the AI system for its outstanding performance on advanced benchmark tests; the system has already achieved "state-of-the-art" performance on FrontierMath Tier 4, ARC-AGI 3 and TerminalBench-4.0.
The release of Astra has once again put the AGI discussion back on the table. According to Brockman, from a retrospective standpoint in a few years' time, it is possible that GPT-6 Astra could be seen as the birthplace of AGI. Brockman was even more specific in his opinion, stating, “For me personally, I do think we're there,” before concluding that, “Welcome to the AGI era.” Nevertheless, OpenAI’s official documentation on the Astra release does not state anything about AGI.
Cybersecurity Is a Major Focus for GPT-6 Astra
One of the top focuses for GPT-6 Astra is cybersecurity. According to OpenAI, Astra has achieved the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold and can recognize vulnerabilities in hardened systems, as well as generate functional exploits for them. This is a significant step forward in terms of the possible practical application of AI for cybersecurity research purposes, though there are certain risks associated with the misuse of the technology by attackers.
During internal testing, Astra apparently identified two new vulnerabilities that have been reported to maintainers of affected software. However, OpenAI is being very careful in regards to Astra's top-level cybersecurity capabilities since they might be potentially used for both security research and exploits generation.
Because of that, access to the most advanced security-related capabilities is currently limited. Cybersecurity defenders can get access to them using OpenAI's Daybreak Blue program, thus allowing the company to add extra security around some of the most useful Astra security features.
GPT-6 Astra Can Handle Autonomous Computer Tasks
Furthermore, OpenAI is trying to market Astra as an AI model which will be able to autonomously do a wide variety of computer-related tasks. It is claimed that with the help of Astra, you can ask the model for assistance in such tasks as website design, scientific analysis, video games production, cybersecurity and programming.
The saving of time could be impressive. OpenAI gives an example of the process which would take around six hours and can be done in under 10 minutes by the help of AI agents which are powered by Astra.
It can be argued that the ability of autonomous performance of tasks is probably the most significant feature of the new GPT-6 Astra. Rather than just generating an answer to the given question, the model is going to perform a number of actions to complete the task.
GPT-6 Astra Launch Coincided With AI Service Outages
Interestingly enough, the day of the GPT-6 Astra launch was also accompanied by service issues on various popular AI websites. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all had some technical difficulties during this time period. Users of ChatGPT complained about problems with conversation, login, file upload, voice mode, searching, Deep Research and images generating functions, and Claude and Grok also had service disruptions.
The actual reasons for the coinciding disruptions were not determined, and there were no proofs linking the disruptions of ChatGPT with GPT-6 Astra at all. However, this coincidence certainly gained much attention due to the release of the new model.
GPT-6 Astra Availability
The availability of GPT-6 Astra will be granted to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, as well as API developers in the next few days according to OpenAI. Some of the model's most advanced security features have additional limitations for now as its deployment will happen gradually.
In light of the model's orientation towards computer usage on its own, programming, science and cybersecurity, GPT-6 Astra stands out as another great stride made by OpenAI in the direction of developing increasingly advanced AI agents. While whether it will eventually qualify as a landmark in AGI development still needs to be seen, OpenAI's claims and Brockman's statements leave no doubt regarding how the company perceives its new creation.
