OpenAI is reportedly working on its first screen-free AI smart speaker that combines ChatGPT, smart home controls, long-term memory, and human-like interactions to create a next-generation AI companion.

It has been reported that OpenAI is planning to launch its first-ever consumer hardware product that integrates the capabilities of AI technology into an ordinary home device, which may turn out to be very different from what we have seen so far. Instead of creating another smart speaker which will perform actions when commanded through speech, OpenAI may be working on something completely new which involves integrating the capability of ChatGPT with a more personalized and proactive experience.
As per the latest report by Bloomberg, the new AI product will be a screenless AI assistant which will get acquainted with its owner and interact in a more human way with them over a period of time, unlike other voice assistants which do not have the ability to build such a strong connection with the user.
OpenAI Is Building More Than Just Another Smart Speaker
It should not include any screen and will thus be distinct from other smart gadgets like the Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub. OpenAI seems to concentrate exclusively on voice interactions and artificial intelligence, enabling people to use ChatGPT without relying on any screen.
OpenAI's new hardware would be able to carry out typical smart speaker tasks such as responding to queries, controlling smart devices around the house, playing songs, keeping reminders, sending notifications, and supplying information at all times. However, according to rumors, OpenAI intends to go beyond these basic tasks.
In contrast to today's smart gadgets, which depend on user commands, an AI companion could take the initiative to help with everyday chores by learning about the person's preferences and assisting with relevant matters during the day.
ChatGPT Could Become Your Personal Home Companion
The most intriguing thing about the device discussed in the report is how deeply it is integrated with ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI intends for the device to gradually get to know more about its owner and their online life, gaining access to such sources as emails, provided that the user gives permission, and thus becoming more useful.
This kind of learning by the AI means that the machine may remember conversations, understand routine actions and needs of the user, and suggest something to the owner without being asked anything.
Therefore, every interaction can be more personal and relevant because instead of providing answers on separate requests, the AI would know everything about you and your routine.
Mechanical Movements Could Make the Device Feel Alive
Most unique of all, perhaps, is the fact that the hardware could be designed with movable mechanical components. Unlike today’s smart speakers that have no moving parts at all, the hardware could be designed to move particular components when interacting with humans.
These components are supposed to give the impression that the AI is present physically in your house rather than simply communicating with you through its voice coming out of the speaker. While it is hard to tell how exactly these features will look like, it seems that OpenAI is trying to create an engaging experience for users.
Should the company succeed, this could result in a whole new breed of hardware for AIs.
A New Category Beyond Smart Speakers
Modern smart speakers have been designed around basic voice commands like playing music, setting alarms, getting weather information, and managing connected home appliances. It seems that OpenAI is taking things to a whole new level.
Rather than developing a smart speaker that would compete with already available smart speakers, the company is planning to build an AI companion that would not only keep up a conversation but also remember previous contexts, get used to the way users live their life, and become more and more useful with time.
It can be called a mix of a virtual assistant, a chat bot, and a home companion.
OpenAI's Hardware Ambitions Come at an Interesting Time
With OpenAI's hardware product coming at a time when there is increasing competition in the field of artificial intelligence, many firms in the industry are beginning to think about using AI-specific hardware rather than simply smartphone applications and chatbots over the Internet.
In addition, the development of hardware at this time coincides with the lawsuit brought by Apple against OpenAI over the theft of trade secrets. As per the article, it seems that OpenAI believes its proposed hardware is quite different from the current Apple products and will not be violating any of their technologies.
Despite the ongoing litigation, the extent of competition in the market for AI hardware has been made quite clear by this example.
AI Hardware Is Becoming the Next Big Battleground
This is true for the whole AI industry because Google has been working on its Nest smart speaker equipped with Google Assistant and Gemini. In turn, Amazon keeps adding to the capabilities of its Echo devices controlled by Alexa with more and more advanced AI features.
Some startups have already tried putting AI in wearables, AI smart pins, AI companions, and always-on assistants that strive to be present around customers all day long.
The OpenAI’s reported home companion is perfectly aligned with this new development. Instead of opening an application each time they require assistance, businesses want their customers to be able to constantly access AI through their device or wearable.
In this case, OpenAI has not yet announced the product, and there are many more unknowns than knowns at this point, from a lack of launch date, price details, or hardware specs.
Nonetheless, if the report by Bloomberg is true, then it would be safe to say that OpenAI's first consumer hardware device will be among the most daring efforts the company has undertaken since the creation of ChatGPT. With all of the features described in the device, including conversational AI, personalization, memory, smart home integration, and physical interaction, it seems like OpenAI wants to give people a new perspective on how an AI assistant can work.
Be it the replacement of smart speakers or something completely different, the AI companion described by Bloomberg shows the current trend in the AI industry toward giving physical form to artificial intelligence.
