Philips Smartphone Set to Enter India With 120Hz Display and 64MP Camera

Philips will soon unveil its first ever smartphone in India, which will come with a budget 5G offering along with specifications such as 6.67-inch 120Hz display, 64MP camera, stereo speakers, and 8GB of RAM.

Philips Smartphone

Philips has begun making its entry into the very competitive smartphone industry in India, and this is a very fascinating move for the consumer electronics brand. It has begun teasing a new smartphone on its website and social media handles, but an Amazon microsite has leaked out many aspects about the smartphone. Even though the name, release date, and price have not been announced by Philips, the specifications show that the smartphone will be in the affordable 5G category.

Philips Teases New Smartphone Launch in India

Philips’ upcoming phone can now be found on Amazon’s microsite, and thus we have a glimpse into what the brand intends to bring to India. In terms of hardware, the Philips handset will sport a 6.67-inch HD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. This would ensure that swiping, animations, and gaming will become smoother with a screen that is twice as fast as regular 60Hz screens that are seen in entry-level smartphones.

Talking about camera hardware, the Philips handset will come with a 64-megapixel main camera unit on the back side. Philips has also revealed that there will be a 16MP front-facing selfie shooter as well. Of course, the megapixel count doesn’t always determine camera performance, but this gives us a fair idea about how many features Philips has packed inside its handset.

There also seems to be an additional audio feature included in the phone. According to Philips, there would be two stereo speakers on the phone with "Ultra Max" branding. Such an inclusion may benefit those who often use multimedia including videos, music, and other material without headphones.

The smartphone will also have an IP64 rating making it water and dust proof. While this feature is not as good as those featured in more expensive smartphones with higher water resistance, it still works well for a budget phone.

Expected to Offer 5G Connectivity

Moreover, the new smartphone by Philips is likely to come in several memory options. The smartphone is supposed to have either 6GB or 8GB RAM, while storage capacity options will include 128GB and 256GB. In any case, customers will have enough space to store their data.

The 5G technology is also another prominent feature. Taking into account that affordable 5G phones are gaining popularity in India, support of the next generation network would be essential for Philips if it wants its product to be competitive against other brands.

Currently, Philips has been advertising the new smartphone using the slogan "Innovation You Can Trust." Nonetheless, it is still unknown what kind of chipsets will be used and what features are provided by the operating system. These factors are quite important for the performance of the smartphone.

Philips Smartphone Price in India

While the exact pricing of the upcoming smartphone by Philips hasn’t been officially revealed yet, it can be speculated based on its specs that it could be priced under Rs 20,000 in the Indian market. Assuming that the above prediction of price is correct, then Philips is entering into one of the most competitive segments of the smartphone industry.

In such a scenario, the phone may find many competitors, and buyers in this segment would consider many factors like display, camera, battery power, processing power, software support, and even 5G before buying the phone. So apart from an appealing spec sheet, Philips needs to offer much more to the buyer.

The biggest USP that Philips has is its recognition factor in the minds of Indian consumers. Philips is a household name in several consumer electronics products, and this reputation of the brand could work in favor of Philips in attracting customers who want an option other than the normal smartphones.

However, entry into the Indian smartphone market is still going to be a daunting task for Philips. Some of the firms that have been in the business include realme, Redmi, OnePlus, OPPO and vivo, and all these have invested in software and after-sales services for smartphones for many years now. It is essential for any newcomer to offer more than just good hardware.

If the brand opts for an ODM-led strategy, where another established company takes care of most of the hardware part, then this could pose a problem to Philips. It could allow it to launch itself into the market faster and keep costs lower, but at the same time make differentiation more difficult. If there are many brands using similar hardware platforms, Philips has to differentiate itself through software, design, pricing or audio technology.

While Philips’ existing business in consumer electronics might help it get off to a good start, the smartphone market is a separate and highly competitive one altogether. It remains to be seen how well Philips’ brand name translates into sales, depending mainly on the price and user experience.

The proposed entry by Philips is coming at a unique time for the budget smartphones segment in India. Some well-known makers of smartphones have moved on from concentrating their efforts at lower prices levels and rather opted to focus on the higher price category, which offers a better margin of profits. This has left some space for some other brands to enter and attract customers that require a good smartphone without having to spend much.

Fire-Boltt has already launched itself into the market for smartphones while Mivi, an audio brand, is gearing up to launch its smartphones. There are others like AI+ that have come into the market as well while Micromax seems to be thinking of re-entering the smartphone business.

One of the reasons behind such a move is the increase in the cost of components used in making smartphones. The cost of memory and storage have increased and therefore it has become hard for manufacturers to offer the same competitive prices that were previously witnessed among budget phones. This has enabled some brands to venture into profitable price ranges, creating room for new brands.

Such an environment is favorable for brands like Philips because there is an enormous consumer base looking for affordable smartphones in India. However, while getting the customers' attention might not be very difficult, creating a sustainable smartphone business will be.

Can Philips Make a Mark With Its First Smartphone?

Thus, the first Philips smartphone will turn out to be a crucial experiment for the manufacturer. It has such characteristics as a 120Hz display, 64MP camera, stereo speakers, IP64, several RAM and storage variants, and 5G, which should ensure a good starting position on paper. However, the ultimate decision will be determined by other factors that Philips does not mention, such as a processor, battery capacity, software capabilities, price and after-sales service.

The whole potentiality is obvious. The budget Indian market of smartphones is not dying out but is evolving; when well-known companies move up, others try to take their place.

This is where Philips could succeed, providing a competitive price along with quality devices and good after-sale service. The advantage of this manufacturer is in its legacy in consumer electronics, but it will have to show much more in the sphere of smartphones. Now that the name of the device, its release date, and pricing strategy remain undisclosed, all attention turns to Philips and its debut in the Indian smartphone market.
