Pune Man Loses ₹11.5 Lakh in Online Task Scam

The message promised he could earn ₹150 immediately by doing basic online activities such as liking a video or leaving a review. At first, skeptical but curious, the man attempted the offer and to his amazement, money was deposited into his bank account mere minutes later.

Sensing the easy money, he went on working on more tasks since he was included in a messaging group controlled by the scammers. Whenever he finished a task, the assured pay would reach his account in no time. The success in the beginning bred a sense of false security and trust.

Merchant Tasks and Upfront Payments

The scammers soon came up with the idea of "merchant tasks", with far greater payoffs. But with it was a catch: the victim must pay money first, which, the scammers assured, would be refunded together with the profit. Convinced that the offer was true and enticed by the possibility of earning more money, the man wired money to several bank accounts jointly owned by the scam operators.

But as he tried to withdraw his money, the scammers continued making excuses and requesting further payments by claiming different bogus reasons such as verification charges, technical glitches, or security deposit. Within the following two days, the victim lost ₹11.5 lakh. Once aware of the scam, he immediately lodged a complaint at the Khadak Police Station in Pune.
