Red Dead Redemption Gets a Free Community Remaster With Better Graphics and Gameplay

Red Dead Redemption has received a major community makeover with Reality Redemption, a free PC mod that upgrades graphics, gameplay, AI, textures, weather and camera systems.

Red Dead Redemption

For gamers who are fans of Red Dead Redemption, there is a reason for them to take another look at Rockstar Games’ masterpiece Western adventure game. This time it is due to the fact that a fan-made modification dubbed Reality Redemption has been released on PC and provides a variety of improvements regarding the visuals, gameplay mechanics, AI, and camera.

The game was initially released back in 2010, making it one of the most lauded titles from the studio and one of the greatest western adventure games ever created. Despite the fact that Red Dead Redemption still looks great and can be considered to be a masterpiece, there are some elements which start to show its age such as textures, environment, AI, and gameplay mechanics.

Reality Redemption Gives Red Dead Redemption a Major Visual Makeover

Produced by modder BadassBaboon, Reality Redemption is intended to be a thorough re-working of the game Red Dead Redemption. Instead of improving only one particular graphical aspect of the game, the mod enhances many other aspects, such as textures, models, weather effects, environment and mechanics.

The mod seeks to enhance the overall graphical realism of the game, as well as fix continuity errors which were left untouched in the original release. As stated by the creator of the mod, the objective is to create a smoother, more realistic experience without losing the identity of the game.

The other major aspect of the makeover happens via texture improvement. Reality Redemption includes over 300 new textures for props as well as improvements to grass and vegetation textures. Animal and vehicle textures have not been ignored either, receiving upgrades in regards to horses, carriage and steam engine textures.

Individually, these changes may seem quite minor, but taken together, they will give the player an even more detailed world to explore in Red Dead Redemption, especially at high resolutions.

Enhanced Loading Screens and Minimap Textures

Graphical improvements aren't restricted just to the objects and environment. Reality Redemption also updates some of the 2D assets used in the game.

The loading screen and minimap textures have received high-resolution textures which more accurately reflect the game's lore and look. Snow textures have also been added to the level of detail textures, bringing yet another element of the environment that was absent from almost all areas of the original game.

While there were snow textures in Red Dead Redemption, those were mostly used in Tall Trees in West Elizabeth. Adding new snow textures to the level of detail gives players yet another reason to look at the game's environments even after a long period of time since they first played the original title.

Red Dead Redemption Mod Also Changes Gameplay

Reality Redemption is not only about graphical improvement. Some additional elements have been incorporated into the game to provide more variety of play.

A new element that can be quite interesting for the players is the availability of a white Arabian horse that can also be used as a war horse. This feature can give additional possibilities to those who have played the game before.

Also, the mod provides players with additional options concerning the weather. The feature allowing the disabling of the forced weather conditions at Thieves' Landing and Tall Trees has been added.

Improved AI Makes Animals and Horses More Reactive

Another area where the artificial intelligence aspect has gained attention in the Reality Redemption project is the adjustments made to the animal and enemy encounters.

The first improvement that has been made is that now the horses will be able to notice any enemies that appear in the vicinity. Thus, instead of being completely predictable, it is likely that the players will get some reactions from their horse instead of getting what they get from the horse in the original game.

Additionally, bears have become more aggressive and can attack the players. Those players who have played this game before and remember all the encounters they had with the wildlife of the game should expect somewhat less predictable gameplay on the same spots of the map.

Dynamic Camera Improvements

One particularly fascinating aspect about Reality Redemption is the implementation of improvements in relation to the camera angle. The mod brings changes that include improvements in field of view and camera positioning, as well as context-specific camera angle options.

It is possible for the camera behavior to differ based on John Marston's location – walking, horseback riding or battle situation. These changes might be insignificant in comparison with the changes in textures, yet the camera positioning has a huge impact on how a relatively old game plays on modern gaming systems.

Such changes might bring a feeling of more modern gameplay experience for the players used to modern open-world games.

Maybe one of the greatest strengths of Reality Redemption is that it does not seem to fundamentally alter Red Dead Redemption at all. Instead, the mod centers on improving many of the finer points of the game while keeping the overall experience intact.

To long-term fans of the original, that is what makes this mod so appealing. A person who has finished the game several times will not likely want an entirely new iteration of the game, but improvements in textures and environment, along with some intelligent AI changes, may be just what the experience needs.

Such changes would be even more noticeable at higher resolutions. For instance, at 4K, there will be no doubt that a difference in textures and environments would make the world of the game look significantly better than it did at the time of the original release.
