Samsung has begun rolling out the Android 17-based One UI 9 update to the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. The update is currently available in South Korea and is expected to expand to more regions soon.

Samsung One UI 9

Samsung has moved on to rolling out the new major software update for some of its older flagship smartphones. The company has already started rolling out One UI 9, based on Android 17, for Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6, and Galaxy Z Flip6 devices. This is yet another step in the ongoing process of rolling out One UI 9 from Samsung.

The Galaxy S24 series, which includes Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra models, is getting this update, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, which are Samsung's last generation foldable smartphones. Similar to other phases of this rollout process, the company is first providing the update in its home market – South Korea.

The update should get rolled out to more countries within the next few days or weeks. It is worth noting that Samsung employs a phased release strategy for rolling out major software updates, which means that availability depends on the particular country, network provider, smartphone model, and other factors. Users of Galaxy S24 smartphones outside South Korea will likely have to wait a bit longer for the update.

One UI 9 Update Size for Galaxy S24 Series

The size of the download for One UI 9 depends largely on the current software version used in the smartphone. Galaxy S24 series owners that have been involved in the One UI 9 beta test program can expect a much smaller update file of about 500 MB since most of the underlying software is already in their phones.

Users that are upgrading directly from One UI 8.5 will find the update file larger. The One UI 9 stable package is said to be roughly 3.8 GB large in the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones. This is not surprising since one of the factors that make up the package is the new version of the operating system.

It is also important to note that the package contains new features from Samsung regarding the user interface as well as other system and software enhancements and improvements. Thus, users may want to connect to Wi-Fi prior to starting the download.

Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 Also Receive One UI 9

Samsung will also be updating One UI 9 for foldable smartphones from its last generation. Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 will also receive the Android 17-powered update along with Galaxy S24 family.

For foldable users who were enrolled in One UI 9 beta program, the update size will be around 408MB. Users switching from One UI 8.5 will supposedly require downloading around 3.5GB.

The update of One UI 9 on Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 is noteworthy since Samsung's foldable range has emerged to be an important platform for offering new software experiences from the company. The large inner display of Galaxy Z Fold6 and smaller outer screen of Galaxy Z Flip6 give extra importance to Samsung's One UI optimization.

One UI 9 Rollout Started With Newer Galaxy Flagships

One UI 9 was released by Samsung for their foldable smartphones launched recently this year. This particular software was launched on Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8 in the month of July. The software was then rolled out on older flagship phones incrementally.

Further, the software was updated to the Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold7, and Galaxy Z Flip7. Now, the company has decided to roll out the software based on Android 17 to the Galaxy S24 series and the 2024 foldable models.

It should be noted that Samsung is following an incremental approach with regards to updating software for all its products. It would take time to update the software to other devices but it will help Samsung in monitoring the performance of the software on different devices.

When Will One UI 9 Arrive in India?

For now, Samsung has rolled out this particular update in South Korea, and it will eventually be rolled out in other markets, which could include India. But since Samsung has not rolled out this update across all regions at the same time, Galaxy S24, Z Fold6, and Z Flip6 owners in India will need to wait for their respective rollout.

When the update is ready, users can manually check by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install. This would depend on the particular model and the regional firmware version of the phone.

One UI 9 Brings Android 17 to Older Galaxy Devices

The most significant part about this release is that One UI 9 will make Android 17 available for Samsung's old flagship handsets. System-wide improvements are usually delivered along with the Android version update, while Samsung's One UI layer will add to Google's base its own changes to the UI, features, and optimizations.

For owners of Galaxy S24 and Samsung's foldable phone generation six, this update will make their hardware even more valuable, extending its life in software terms. The Korean company now pays particular attention to the software life of its flagship handsets.

The company will surely launch more One UI 9 to its compatible Galaxy smartphones and tablets. In the next few weeks, there might be additional Galaxy phones that will get the software. However, this process will take place according to different timelines per model and country.

For now, Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 users may monitor the updates through the Software Update tab in their phones. In case the update has not been launched yet, this doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with the phone this process is gradual and step-by-step.
