Discover practical and effective AC usage tips that can help reduce electricity bills during the scorching Indian summer while maintaining comfortable cooling at home.

With rising temperatures in summer in India every year, the use of air conditioners has now become a need rather than a luxury. Whether you are working at home, resting peacefully at night, or just surviving the day through the harsh summer afternoon, the use of an AC has become essential for millions of families in India. But there is one thing which is common to most users of an AC; the high electricity bill.

Using an AC does not necessarily mean that you will be paying high electricity bills every month. It is possible to reduce the amount of energy consumed by ACs through simple steps and techniques. From personal experience, I have discovered that having a cool room does not mean setting very low temperatures or running the AC constantly for many hours every day.
Here are some useful tips on how to use your AC properly while keeping the room cool.

Keep Curtains and Blinds Closed During Peak Heat
It can be quite effortless to save on energy by simply pulling the curtain or blinds shut when the sun is at its peak throughout the day. The sunshine entering straight into your house through open windows will warm up the room and cause you to have your air conditioner working harder and using more energy.
The use of heavy curtains, blackout curtains, or insulated window treatments will help cut down the amount of heat that can come into the room. It is an effort that will not only cool down your room naturally but will also make the air conditioner’s work easier and save energy in the long run.
If your room gets direct sun in the afternoon hours, this is one simple trick you can do to see a marked difference.
Switch Off Unnecessary Electronics
All that people think about is the air conditioner without realizing the heating effect caused by other electrical appliances used in the room. Electrical appliances such as televisions, video games, laptops, microwaves, battery chargers, and even lighting cause a continuous heating effect when operational.
In my case, I realized that turning off appliances when they are not in use helps cool down the room. Minimal heating in the room will mean that the AC will have an easier time maintaining the desired temperatures.
Not only do we reduce the consumption of electricity from these appliances but also from the AC itself.
Install the AC in the Correct Location
The role of AC placement is often under-rated when it comes to energy efficiency. For me, at first, I thought that the placement did not really matter until later when I realized its great importance on performance and energy consumption.
The interior part of the AC needs to be placed in a location where there is no sunlight or any kind of heat source directly hitting it. If the AC gets direct sunlight, its ability to cool the place becomes compromised. Also, the exterior side of the AC needs to have a clear flow of air. The AC cannot be kept in an enclosed environment since this affects the performance of the compressor. Placement ensures efficient cooling and power saving.
Set the Temperature Around 24°C
This must be one of the biggest mistakes committed by many Indians during summer months. There is a common notion that by setting the temperature of the AC to 18 degrees Celsius or 20 degrees Celsius makes the AC work faster in cooling the room. The truth is that an AC works with the same speed irrespective of whatever temperature setting you choose. Lowering temperature simply makes your compressor work harder and thus increase consumption of electricity.
I happen to keep my temperature around 24 degrees Celsius. It is advised to do so in order to save on electricity and at the same time keep yourself cool. With the temperature kept at 24 degrees Celsius, the room is kept cool while the consumption of electricity reduces significantly.
Use Trees and Natural Shade Around the House
Cooling strategies from nature can be employed to minimize reliance on air conditioning. In case there are trees, greenery, or shady regions adjacent to windows or balconies, then the sun's rays can be obstructed.
Greenery in and around the house is an effective strategy for keeping the surroundings cool naturally. Even small greenery in the form of balcony plants and outside shading is sufficient enough to keep rooms from overheating at all times of day.
The same way, if the air conditioning system installed outdoors is shaded, it can lead to improved performance in terms of its cooling capability since the compressor would operate more efficiently. Such measures can combine together and increase efficiency in general.
Clean the AC Filters Regularly
The most overlooked maintenance activity is probably that of cleaning the AC filter. In due course of time, dust settles inside the filters which result in hindrances for proper cooling process of the AC.
As soon as there is an obstruction for airflow, it becomes harder for the AC to cool down the room which increases the use of electricity. Poor airflow through the filters can also affect air quality.
Every time I ensure that my AC filters get cleaned regularly especially during summers since I use it daily for cooling purposes. It increases airflow which leads to better cooling of the room. Often enough, cleaning of filters alone does the trick.
Never Skip Regular AC Servicing
Maintenance is very vital when it comes to keeping your air conditioner functional and energy-efficient. Normally, I try my best to ensure that I take my air conditioner for maintenance before the start of the summer period or even after summer.
The maintenance process helps to diagnose any faults that may be present such as leakages in gases, dirt in the coils, blocked drainage, or poor airflow. Such issues lead to increased energy consumption without the knowledge of the consumer.
In addition to ensuring proper functionality and better cooling ability of the system, regular maintenance saves one from wasting power as a result of an inefficient air conditioning system. A little investment in maintenance will save a lot more on energy bills.
Small Habits Can Create Big Savings
Reducing electricity bills while using an air conditioner does not require sacrificing comfort. Over time, I realized that small daily habits make a surprisingly big difference.
Simple steps like:
Keeping curtains closed
Cleaning filters regularly
Avoiding unnecessary electronics
Using natural shade
Maintaining proper AC temperature
Getting timely servicing
can collectively help reduce electricity consumption significantly.
Most importantly, these habits also improve the lifespan and performance of the air conditioner itself.
ACs have become a must-have during Indian summers, owing to increased temperatures and heatwaves. Even though electricity expenses might seem daunting, careful and conscious use of ACs can enable you to remain comfortable without having to splurge unnecessarily.
Everything from setting the right temperature, which is 24 degrees centigrade, to maintenance practices and minimizing indoor heating helps increase efficiency and conserve electricity.
Ultimately, remaining comfortable during the summer does not necessarily translate into high electrical expenses. With some adjustments and discipline, you can keep yourself cool while managing your electricity expenses.
