Vivo Vision Discovery Edition Launches as First Chinese Mixed Reality Headset

Vivo has made its official foray into the mixed reality (MR) arena with the launch of its first-ever headset, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition. Coinciding with the brand's 30th anniversary in China, this launch also positions Vivo as the first Chinese smartphone brand to launch a mixed reality headset. The launch marks the company's move beyond smartphones and wearables into immersive technology. Notably, the headset is very much similar in design to the Apple Vision Pro, an indication of how ambitious Vivo is to play a role in the international MR market.

Vivo Vision

Design Similar to Apple Vision Pro but Much Lighter

In the initial appearance, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition headset is almost identical in design with Apple's Vision Pro as far as the Dual Loop Band and Solo Knit Band are concerned. Nevertheless, Vivo sets itself apart with an enormous plus—its weight. The majority of MR headsets are heavier than 500 grams, tending to be uncomfortable to wear even for long periods. The Vivo Vision Discovery Edition, however, weighs a mere 388 grams, making it one of the lightest MR headsets in the market today. This light design guarantees improved comfort and wearability for longer durations, either for entertainment, gaming, or work.

Comfort-Oriented Design with Various Fit Options

Vivo has taken the extra effort to ensure the headset is comfortable for a broad user base. It features four sizes of light seal and eight foam padding for customization based on individual comfort. These updates minimize fatigue while using the headset for long periods, which makes it perfect for users intending to go deep into long MR sessions.

Striking Dual 8K Imagery with Cinema-Grade Precision

In terms of visuals, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition is nothing less than impressive. It boasts dual 8K micro-LED screens with a 3,840 × 3,552 pixel resolution per eye, reaching a covering 94% DCI-P3 color gamut. With a DeltaE < 2 precision, imagery is sure to be realistic and vibrant, perfectly replicating real-world colors. Vivo has also been busy with implementing one of the most prevalent problems in MR headsets—visual strain. The headset maintains brightness difference between both eyes at ≤ 2 nits and color difference at ΔE < 2, so there is less strain even in prolonged viewing times.

Under the hood, Vivo Vision Discovery Edition comes equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, which brings 2.5x GPU and 8x AI performance over its previous generation. The high-performance chipset will facilitate glitch-free rendering and rapid spatial computing, which are critical for mixed reality applications. Combined with Vivo's custom OriginOS Vision software, the headset promises to deliver a seamless fusion of digital information into the wearer's environment. Its interaction system is user-friendly, based on move-and-pinch gestures, which are becoming the norm on top MR headsets.

High-end Tracking and Gesture Recognition

One of the most prominent features of the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition is its sophisticated tracking system. It offers 1.5-degree high-precision eye tracking, 26 degrees of freedom for fingertip gesture recognition, and a 175-degree vertical tracking range. This degree of accuracy enables users to engage with virtual objects in a natural and smooth manner, increasing immersion and usability.

A 120-Foot Cinema Screen for Entertainment

For entertainment enthusiasts, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition converts into a 120-foot-long virtual cinema screen. This provides an immersive, cinema-like experience in the comfort of one's home. Users are able to watch movies, live sports, and e-sports in panoramic mode or split-screen mode so they do not miss any part of the action. Vivo says this headset is designed as a one-stop solution for entertainment, gaming, and productivity purposes, and it brings a seamless digital life experience to its users.

Pricing and Availability

So far, Vivo has not disclosed the Vision Discovery Edition headset's price. Availability also appears to be restricted to China at least for the time being. Still, since it boasts such revolutionary features and a lighter design, the headset may garner considerable international interest if Vivo chooses to roll it out globally.
