WhatsApp Could Soon Let You Send View-Once Text Messages for Better Privacy

WhatsApp may soon introduce view-once text messages, enabling users to send sensitive information that disappears immediately after being read. The feature is expected to include screenshot blocking, forwarding restrictions, and enhanced privacy controls.

WhatsApp

There is news about the latest innovation in WhatsApp, which may revolutionize the process of sharing sensitive data through WhatsApp. Reports by WABetaInfo say that the messaging service owned by Meta Platforms Inc. is working on introducing view-once text message on iPhones, which will help users send a text that vanishes instantly after reading.

This new innovation, once introduced in WhatsApp, will help the users of WhatsApp enjoy their already existing feature of sending view-once pictures, videos, and audio messages. With the introduction of this new technology, users can ensure privacy when it comes to sharing confidential text messages as well.

Despite the fact that the feature has not been completed yet and it hasn't even been seen by the beta testers, it has sparked some interest among privacy-oriented users. For quite some time, those users of WhatsApp who wished to have their texts self-destructed needed to resort to some clever tricks, such as creating images out of texts and sending them as view-once media.

How WhatsApp’s View-Once Text Messages May Work

From the information provided by WABetaInfo, the users will be able to activate this function by composing the text and then pressing the send button on the message box. This action is believed to present a new function that reads “Send as view once.”

Upon sending the message, users will not be able to view and open the message beyond one single instance. The moment this is done, the content becomes unreadable and inaccessible to the users.

This new feature is believed to be available in one-to-one chats as well as group chats. It would seem logical that this function would not be available in WhatsApp Channels since channel-based messaging is primarily designed for broadcasting messages.

Additional Privacy Protections Expected

It seems that WhatsApp will employ the same security protocols for view-once text messages as those applied to view-once media. It was reported that view-once text messages cannot be copied, saved, forwarded, or shared by their recipients with other people.

Moreover, WhatsApp will also prevent its users from taking screenshots or screen recording the messages when reading them. Such steps are aimed at minimizing the risks associated with saving the message content without prior consent from the sender.

Nevertheless, in light of recent technological progress, total protection cannot be ensured. For example, users can still take photos of their phones' screens with the help of another smartphone or camera. Nonetheless, the task pursued by WhatsApp is likely to make unauthorized saving much more complicated rather than absolutely impossible.

In addition, the implementation of the view-once text messaging feature will address the lack in WhatsApp’s privacy protection system. WhatsApp currently provides end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, chat locks, and view-once multimedia features. By applying the same principle of privacy to text messages, WhatsApp is expected to create a uniform and seamless privacy environment.

This feature can be beneficial for a lot of people who often use WhatsApp to exchange their one-time password, one-time code, bank details, confidential business information, addresses, or any other data that should disappear once viewed.

It is important to mention that unlike disappearing messages, which will automatically disappear after a certain amount of time has passed, view-once text messages disappear at once after being seen by the recipient.

When Could the Feature Launch?

Currently, there has been no official statement from WhatsApp regarding the launch date of their soon-to-be-released view-once text message option. Considering the fact that the feature is still under development, it might take a while for it to become available, and it might take some weeks or even months until then.

Nevertheless, considering how WhatsApp is known for prioritizing privacy, the feature seems like a natural addition to WhatsApp. Assuming the success of its implementation, the feature will become yet another valuable addition made by WhatsApp in terms of user privacy.

Overall, with other competing messaging apps also focusing more on privacy and security, WhatsApp’s new feature becomes extremely relevant. In particular, those who send sensitive data through messaging can benefit greatly from this privacy tool.
