WhatsApp Plus Subscription Brings Premium Customization Features to Android Users

As part of its efforts to explore more revenue streams, Meta has launched the WhatsApp Plus plan to its beta users with Android devices. According to sources at WABetaInfo, the roll-out will eventually be made to all users and even be available to those using Apple iPhones.

WhatsApp Plus

This step comes as part of the changes in Meta's monetisation strategy, similar to the recent trials of Instagram's premium features. Nonetheless, WhatsApp Plus stands apart in that it is an add-on feature rather than a complete overhaul of the app.

A Customisation-Focused Premium Experience

WhatsApp Plus is not an attempt to change the way messaging works but rather aims to make its appearance better for its users. The subscription is all about personalization and ease of use for those users who wish to be able to have more influence over the application interface and chat functionality.

So, here are the perks of having a subscription:

Personalization Becomes a Top Priority

Those who decide to become premium users will have access to 18 different colors of accents to choose from and replace the green color of the standard interface which was so iconic of WhatsApp.

Moreover, there are also 14 different variants of icons that users may choose from and customize according to their preferences.

Better Chat Management Features

Another useful addition would be the feature that will allow you to pin a total of 20 chats at once, which is 17 more than the current number of chats that you can currently pin, and this will make a great improvement especially if you have many different chats going on.

WhatsApp Plus would allow the user to manage chat lists easily with features like bulk management of chat list themes and notifications in one sitting.

Stickers, Sounds & Flashiness

Premium stickers are one of the features that come with the upgraded package, some of which include full screen animated stickers. It is intriguing to note that such animations are viewable to even non-subscribers.

Other additional features offered include more ringtones and sound notifications.

Pricing and Availability

At present, WhatsApp Plus is only available to a small subset of Android beta testers. Pricing appears to be region-specific, but early indications suggest a monthly fee of around $2.99 (approximately ₹250).

The subscription follows a standard model:

  • Auto-renewal enabled by default

  • Option to cancel anytime

  • Expected free trial for new users in select regions

A global rollout will depend on feedback from this testing phase. While iOS support is confirmed to be in development, Meta has not shared a specific timeline yet.

What Remains Free?

Despite the introduction of a paid tier, WhatsApp is not putting its core features behind a paywall. Users will continue to enjoy:

  • Free messaging (text, voice, and video)

  • Status updates

  • End-to-end encryption for all communications

This ensures that privacy and essential functionality remain untouched an important factor for WhatsApp’s massive global user base.

How It Compares to Competitors

WhatsApp Plus adoption aligns its strategy with that of Telegram, providing a paid plan with additional functionalities while maintaining the basic service for free. On the other hand, Signal remains one of the applications that provides all functions free of charge.

The typical user will find the base version of WhatsApp sufficient for their needs. Nevertheless, WhatsApp Plus may be appealing to a small group of users who require extensive customization options or complex chat management systems.

It goes without saying that WhatsApp Plus is not meant for everyone. The target audience here is power users that would love additional flexibility and options in managing the app. Most of these features, such as themes and icon packs, can be obtained in other ways and via third-party apps.

However, there is no denying the convenience provided by the built-in nature of these functions. In all fairness, features like chat pinning and bulk actions can be beneficial to users with numerous conversations going on at once.

It is certainly worth noting how Meta develops the product further during its beta stage.
