WhatsApp Rolls Out Built-in Message Translation Feature on iOS with Offline Support

WhatsApp is once more improving user experience with the introduction of a long-awaited translation feature for iOS users. Having rolled out the feature on Android a few weeks before, Meta has now begun implementing it for iPhone users worldwide. This update that comes with version 25.28.74 enables users to translate messages within chats directly no more third-party translation applications or copying messages elsewhere.

WhatsApp Message Translation

WhatsApp Built-in Message Translation

Over the past months, WhatsApp has been launching a series of AI-based features such as summarization and writing suggestions. With the latest addition of message translation, the app now seeks to break language barriers between people from around the globe. The new tool translates to 21 languages, which is more convenient than ever to communicate freely with friends, relatives, and co-workers who have different languages.

The update also comes with the official support for Live Photos, allowing users to share animated moments right from the app. Meta states that the translation feature will roll out in phases over the next few weeks and therefore some users may have to wait for it to appear on their devices.

How to Use WhatsApp's Translation Feature on iPhone

Using the new translation feature is simple and integrated right into WhatsApp’s existing message options. To check if it’s available on your device:

  1. Tap and hold any message in a chat.

  2. Select “More…” from the menu.

  3. If available, you’ll see the “Translate” option.

The first time you activate this feature, WhatsApp will ask you to choose your source and target languages and download the necessary language packs. After these packs have been downloaded, you can translate messages even without an internet connection, a significant benefit for users in less connected regions.

You can also control or delete downloaded language packs by going to Settings → Translate → Downloaded Languages.

Supported Languages

According to WABetaInfo, the following 21 languages are currently supported for in-app translation (availability may vary based on iOS version):

  • Arabic

  • Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified)

  • Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional)

  • Dutch

  • English (UK)

  • English (US)

  • French

  • German

  • Hindi

  • Indonesian

  • Italian

  • Japanese

  • Korean

  • Polish

  • Portuguese (Brazil)

  • Russian

  • Spanish

  • Thai

  • Turkish

  • Ukrainian

  • Vietnamese

Feature Limitations and Requirements

Though this new feature is extremely convenient, there are a few limitations. As Meta states, users can only translate text messages in one-on-one and group chats. Locations, documents, contacts, stickers, and GIFs are not currently supported to be translated.

To use the feature smoothly, you’ll need a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection for downloading languages and sufficient storage space on your device. Once installed, offline translation works without network access.

Available Now on the App Store

The translation feature is one of WhatsApp's continuous attempts to make conversations more global and inclusive. Whether it is talking to global clients or communicating with friends across borders, this feature guarantees easier communication without languages getting in the way.

WhatsApp for iOS is free to download on the App Store, and the new version (25.28.74) is rolling out incrementally to all users.
