WhatsApp has introduced a new green dot online status indicator in its latest iOS beta, allowing users to see when contacts are actively online while maintaining existing privacy settings.

A new feature is currently under development by WhatsApp to make communications more interactive and assist users to understand when their friends and family members are making active use of the application. WhatsApp, owned by Meta company, has launched a new green dot online status icon for users who have iPhones and are using WhatsApp's beta version.
This feature has been present in many other popular messaging applications, such as Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and Discord. The feature was initially seen on WhatsApp Android beta version last month and then made its way into the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS version. This may be viewed as a very minor addition; however, it demonstrates WhatsApp's ongoing attempts to keep up with the times.
WhatsApp Green Dot Online Status Indicator Arrives on iOS Beta
As stated by WABetaInfo, the new feature can be found on the WhatsApp for iOS beta version 26.26.10.72. It adds a green circle that pops up at the lower-right corner of the profile picture of a contact when that particular person is currently online.
It changes in real-time as well, which means that it vanishes instantly as soon as the user goes offline, thus allowing you to know if that person is currently online without having to check their Last Seen status.
This feature is currently available only for iPhone beta testers, and it is still being developed and isn’t available for all WhatsApp users yet.
How the New Green Dot Works
The current design is rather straightforward. Unlike the previous version where the green dot was spread around the entire app, the green dot only shows up on the Contact Info screen.
That is, the green dot does not show up in the chat list screen or even within any conversation. This means that in order to know if a person is online, one must go to their info screen.
The current design is practical yet less useful due to its limited appearance.
Competitors Already Offer a More Convenient Experience
Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and Discord have long provided the means for indicating online status on the Internet. Using these applications, one can see who is online right away just by looking at the chat list, which allows people to engage in real-time conversations much more easily.
WhatsApp's online status in beta looks less innovative compared to those apps since you have to go to a separate Contact Info page in order to see whether the user is available or not.
Meta might decide to develop the online status feature even further before launching its stable version if they get positive feedback after testing the app's beta.
Privacy Settings Continue to Protect Users
Privacy is one of the primary issues when it comes to online indicators. Luckily for us, WhatsApp is not altering anything when it comes to its existing online privacy settings.
The green dot fully complies with the Last Seen & Online settings within the app. In case you have opted for hiding your online status from others, the green dot will not be seen by anyone else. Similarly, anyone who cannot see your online status cannot see the green dot either.
This ensures that there is no added exposure of your personal information.
Limited Beta Rollout for Android and iPhone
The online status feature is presently undergoing a trial with a selected few beta testers using Android and iOS phones. WhatsApp has yet to announce any dates regarding the availability of the feature to all users.
Like most beta-tested WhatsApp features, the team at Meta will probably analyze any user reviews and make some modifications before implementing the feature more broadly.
Beta-tested WhatsApp features can go through major changes before becoming stable features, and at times, they may never be released at all.
How to Try the Feature Early
Those who wish to try the latest updates from the WhatsApp can join the beta program that is officially offered by the company. Users who have an Android device can register for the program via the Google Play Beta program, whereas the iPhone owners can register via the TestFlight app provided by Apple.
It should be noted that the beta slots are limited and not always available. For most people, it would be better to wait for the release of the stable version as the current version of the green dot lacks many features available on other messaging applications.
The green dot status on WhatsApp can prove to be a good addition in real time as it can help facilitate communication within the app, although currently limited in scope. This new addition by WhatsApp shows its continued efforts in making the messaging experience better for the user without compromising his privacy.
This feature is currently under trial but once introduced on chat lists and conversations, it can prove to be quite helpful as compared to the current scenario of other messaging apps out there. Until then, however, it is only the beta testers who can get the privilege to test this feature.
