Xiaomi Launches Mijia in India to Build a Smarter Connected Home Ecosystem

Xiaomi has launched Mijia by Xiaomi in India to strengthen its presence in the smart home and lifestyle segment. The new brand will focus on connected home products and could eventually expand into large appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners.

Mijia by Xiaomi

In another step toward building its footprint in India, the Chinese electronics company has introduced a new brand named Mijia by Xiaomi which focuses on home and lifestyle products. With the launch of the new brand, Xiaomi is now completing 12 years in India. This step indicates that the Chinese smartphone brand has decided to venture into areas that extend beyond phones and other gadgets.

Mijia, which means “Mi Home” in translation, would offer Xiaomi’s home and lifestyle products a dedicated brand identity in the country. As the brand has been successful in smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, air purifiers, security cameras, and other AIoT products, Mijia would give a special brand identity to its portfolio of home and lifestyle products.

According to the company, Mijia would continue to maintain its close connection with Xiaomi and would be focused on features like smartness, connected devices, and ease of control of the home products. Unlike other brands that offer standalone appliances, Xiaomi intends to provide a connected experience with the help of its home products.

Mijia by Xiaomi Will Focus on Home and Lifestyle Products

With the introduction of Mijia, Xiaomi now has a brand specifically dedicated to its expanding portfolio of home and lifestyle solutions in India. At present, Xiaomi is selling various smart home appliances in the country such as air purifiers, televisions, security cameras, among others. By introducing Mijia in India, Xiaomi aims to beef up its home appliances division and maybe move into larger home appliance products in the coming days.

Even though Xiaomi hasn't mentioned the first large appliances that are expected to launch under the Mijia brand, the new initiative allows it the opportunity to launch a wide variety of large household appliances. These could include, but are not limited to, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and so forth.

It should be noted that at present, there haven't been any official announcements made by Xiaomi regarding any upcoming launches of large appliances in India.

Xiaomi Wants to Build a Connected Home Ecosystem

One of the most central concepts behind Mijia is connectivity. Xiaomi does not just wish to sell various appliances individually; it wishes to see these appliances interact as part of the larger ecosystem of a smart home.

From the consumer perspective, this means controlling various compatible devices via Xiaomi's software without the need for separate application or control systems for each appliance. Given the right combination of products, people may one day have much more control over their homes via the same ecosystem.

It becomes even more crucial because the technology of smart homes is becoming increasingly common among consumers. People are now searching for products that could interact with each other and be controlled via smartphones or other gadgets.

The success of Mijia in India will thus not only depend on how many products Xiaomi will launch but also how well they work together.

Mijia Is Part of Xiaomi’s Human × Car × Home Strategy

Launching of Mijia in India is also related to Xiaomi’s Human × Car × Home approach that was announced by the company on a global level in 2023. The strategy aims to integrate the use of smartphones, personal gadgets, cars and home appliances through a technology ecosystem created by Xiaomi and its HyperOS platform.

Xiaomi has already established quite a strong "Human" line in India through smartphones, tablets, TVs, wearables and other personal technology products. It seems that now the company is giving more importance to the "Home" side of its ecosystem.

In this sense, Mijia may turn out to be an essential element of Xiaomi's future strategy in India. In case the company succeeds in integrating home appliances with its existing smartphones and gadgets, it will create more seamless technology experience for the users.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO Brands Will Continue Separately

However, the development of Mijia doesn't mean that Xiaomi is going to change the current brand architecture in any way. According to the company, its flagship line of products will retain the name of Xiaomi, while Redmi and POCO brands will stay on their own within the brand portfolio.

Mijia will only be used for one particular reason – as the name of the brand family for home and lifestyle products.

This will simplify the customer experience of interacting with the products of Xiaomi. Instead of having various home devices to compete for the attention of buyers under the same Xiaomi umbrella, the company can utilize Mijia for the development of a separate brand identity for these products.

Moreover, the strategy is common for many other major consumer electronics manufacturers.

Xiaomi first entered India in 2014 mainly selling smartphones. However, in the last 12 years, the company has grown in leaps and bounds, extending its products into several segments like television, tablets, home devices, accessories, and other consumer electronic products.

Mijia launch can therefore be termed as yet another milestone in this expansion path. The home appliance segment in India is one which already has established brands like LG, Samsung, Haier, and Panasonic competing in various segments. On the other hand, home automation is becoming increasingly popular among consumers looking for automated devices in their homes.

Existing strength of Xiaomi in smartphones and connected devices might prove to be an advantage for Mijia especially among those consumers who are already aware about Xiaomi ecosystem.

However, getting into large appliances business is going to be entirely a different ball game for Xiaomi compared to selling smartphones and small smart devices. Devices like refrigerators, washing machine and ACs are quite high value items and stay in the household for several years.

Pricing and After-Sales Service

While connecting functionalities may help distinguish Mijia devices from those of competitors, Xiaomi needs to do well on a number of other parameters if it is to succeed in building the brand among home appliances in India.

Price will be a key parameter since the company has traditionally been winning over Indian customers through low price levels, and the strategy might prove effective for Mijia as well. Yet, there must be comprehensive maintenance services in place to ensure proper support for large appliances.

After sales service might turn out to be no less important than smart functionalities. Customers buying an air conditioner, refrigerator or washing machine would probably think about installation, warranty and maintenance services before choosing a device.

In addition to that, Mijia should ensure that the smart functionalities will be really helpful but not merely introduced as a gimmick for marketing purposes.

What Mijia Means for Indian Consumers

Immediate effect for the Indian customers will be the addition of Mijia branding for Xiaomi on all its future home and lifestyle products. The current Xiaomi branded smart home products will remain a part of the wider ecosystem of the company, but Mijia will provide better brand identity for its future home products.

Larger effect will be possible in the case when the company starts manufacturing larger home appliances under its new brand name Mijia. The range of products including smart cameras, air purifiers, washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioners will let the company enter the market with a significantly higher share of consumer home technologies spendings.

In the case of successful integration with the company's smartphones, tablets, TVs and other devices, Mijia may become one of the most important pillars of the business in India.

Mijia brand launch represents a critical change in Xiaomi’s approach towards the India market. Following the success of establishing their consumer base with smartphones and venturing into television, tablets, and smart devices, Xiaomi now intends to ensure its place in homes becomes more prominent.

The success of the Mijia brand launch will depend on the effective execution of the plan. In order for Xiaomi to succeed in making Indians opt for its products for large household purchases, it will have to deliver quality hardware, competitive prices, convenient smart functionalities, effective after-sale support, and efficient integration with the rest of the ecosystem.

At present, Xiaomi has not disclosed the entire product roadmap of Mijia for India. However, the launch of this specialized home and lifestyle brand leaves little doubt about the fact that Xiaomi is eager to become an integral part of Indian homes beyond the smartphone segment.

With further development of Mijia products range in India, the brand may prove to be an important element of the overall Xiaomi’s vision of connected homes using HyperOS ecosystem.
