Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G Go Global With 7,500mAh Battery and 120Hz Display

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G globally, bringing a massive 7,500mAh battery, 120Hz display, 50MP camera and HyperOS 3. Here’s everything about their price, specifications, features and potential India launch.

Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G

Xiaomi has been expanding its low-cost Redmi range on a global scale, launching the new Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G models in Malaysia. Both smartphones are aimed at budget-savvy consumers thanks to their huge display, powerful battery capacity, 50MP camera, and newest HyperOS 3 software by Xiaomi. While the majority of their features are similar, the Redmi 17 5G gains several additional benefits, including more modern Qualcomm processor, 5G technology, and UFS 2.2 memory.


It should be noted that the global Redmi 17 5G model differs from its Chinese counterpart that was launched just a couple of months ago. Xiaomi decided to replace the Unisoc T8300 chipset used in the local Redmi 17 5G with the more modern Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 for the international version of the smartphone. In addition, it features a much larger battery capacity and faster charging than the Redmi 17 5G in China.

Redmi 17 Price and Availability

Xiaomi is now selling the Redmi 17 4G with 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage from MYR 669 (~Rs 16,000). The Redmi 17 5G model with the same amount of RAM and storage is priced at MYR 769, equivalent to Rs 18,000. The same 5G model will cost you MYR 869 or about Rs 20,000 if you go for the 4GB/256GB variant.


At present, both smartphones are available for sale in the Xiaomi online shop in Malaysia. For the record, the Redmi 17 4G is offered in four colour options: Black, Deep Blue, Lotus Purple and Oak Green. The Redmi 17 5G smartphone, on the other hand, comes in three colours – Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange.


What is important for Indian customers is that Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G was listed in the BIS certification website in Malaysia. This indicates that Xiaomi could be planning the launch of the smartphone in India. However, Xiaomi hasn’t announced any launch date or pricing details for India yet.


Redmi 17 5G and 4G Display

Both Redmi 17 series come equipped with a huge 6.9-inch HD+ LCD display intended for those customers who look for large display but without going to a more expensive tier. The screen is capable of displaying content at 120Hz refresh rate making the navigation across social networks and the Internet much smoother compared to the standard 60Hz rate.


Additionally, the display is capable of handling 240Hz touch sampling rate, with maximum brightness rated by Xiaomi at 825 nits. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i providing some extra durability for day-to-day usage.


Furthermore, both of these models receive IP64 protection class, protecting them from dust and accidental water splashing. This is quite a valuable feature for budget phones, especially taking into account the environmental resistance factor.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Powers the Redmi 17 5G

The most significant differences in hardware of the two Redmi 17 models are observed in their chipsets. The Redmi 17 5G smartphone has the chipset called Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 from Qualcomm, which operates at up to 2.4 GHz CPU speeds. In addition, this model has 4 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage.


The usage of UFS 2.2 should provide the 5G version of Redmi 17 with a certain advantage compared to its 4G version due to faster app loading, data transfer and storage in general. Users who install many applications on their smartphones and/or save many media files might appreciate the difference provided by faster storage.


However, the Redmi 17 4G uses a 12nm Mediatek Helio G91-Ultra chipset, along with 4 GB of RAM and storage technology called eMMC 5.1. Therefore, the 4G version of this smartphone can be considered inferior to its 5G version in terms of connectivity and storage performance.


7,500mAh Battery

Battery life could be said to be one of the key highlights of the Redmi 17 series. Each of the devices has a huge 7,500mAh battery, which is definitely more than the capacity offered by most budget smartphones.


It allows 45W fast wired charging, while both phones can offer 22.5W fast reverse charging that can help charge compatible accessories or another phone if needed.


The international version of the Redmi 17 5G looks better in comparison with the Chinese one. In China, the Redmi 17 5G had a battery capacity of 6,300mAh, and it only offered 15W fast charging, but now, the new international variant of the smartphone has a 7,500mAh battery and 45W fast charging.

50MP Camera and HyperOS 3

The responsibility of taking pictures will be on a 50MP rear camera, and a 8MP front camera will come in handy during selfies and video chats. Both phones are capable of recording videos in a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30fps.


The cameras might not be able to give a tough competition to more advanced Redmi or even Xiaomi handsets; however, the 50MP sensor will be enough for normal picture-taking conditions in favorable light conditions. It seems like here the emphasis is made on providing an efficient camera system without spending too much money.


In terms of the software, both phones will work on HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. Using Xiaomi’s advanced software on affordable hardware allows Redmi 17 series users to enjoy the benefits of the latest software interface from the manufacturer without having to spend extra money.


Redmi 17 5G vs Redmi 15 5G

In addition, the Redmi 17 5G has an interesting way to consider regarding what Xiaomi is doing in terms of upgrading its device. The older Redmi 15 5G had a 6.9-inch FHD+ screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset.


In addition, the Redmi 15 5G was equipped with a 7,000mAh battery that supported charging at a power of 33W. Consequently, in some respects, the new Redmi 17 5G may seem like a step back because it has lower specifications concerning the display resolution and refresh rate, as well as Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 which has a different range of performance. Thus, apparently, Xiaomi concentrated efforts on making its new smartphone better regarding battery capacity, fast charging, updated software, and 5G capability.


Could Redmi 17 5G Launch in India?

There is a chance that this phone will launch in India. Recently, the Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G phone was found on the BIS certification list, indicating that the company is planning to launch it in India. Nevertheless, getting certification from the BIS doesn’t always mean an immediate launch; therefore, the pricing and availability of the phone in India have not been announced by the company.


If the phone is released in India as a global variant, then this one could be a good choice in the budget 5G segment for consumers interested in a powerful battery. The phone has a rather balanced specification list: a 7,500mAh battery, 45W fast charging, 120Hz refresh rate screen, Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 SoC, and UFS 2.2 storage.


Out of the two phones, the Redmi 17 5G seems like the better buy provided that there is not much difference in price between the two models. It offers 5G connectivity, more modern chipset 4nm and UFS 2.2 memory.


On the other hand, the Redmi 17 4G could be an appealing choice to those seeking the largest smartphone screen size along with the biggest battery capacity at the most affordable prices. With its Helio G91-Ultra chipset and eMMC 5.1 storage, this device won’t be suitable for those looking for the best performance, but this feature may be irrelevant for ordinary tasks such as calling, messaging, social networking and streaming videos.


In general, the Redmi 17 series illustrates how Xiaomi focuses on the endurance and software of its budget devices. In particular, the Redmi 17 5G stands out by the fact that the global version is considerably better off than the Chinese version in terms of battery and charging capabilities. If, at some point, Xiaomi releases the Redmi 17 5G at an attractive price in India, it can compete very well in the segment of affordable 5G smartphones.
