Aadhaar App Crosses 4 Crore Downloads as Digital Identity Services Shift to Smartphones

The Aadhaar app has surpassed 4 crore downloads, with millions of users updating mobile numbers, addresses and email IDs while managing biometric security directly from their smartphones.

Aadhaar Download

However, India’s digital identity ecosystem keeps growing at a very fast rate, with the app for Aadhaar being downloaded more than 4 crores by now. The fact is a demonstration of the fact that millions of Indians have started using their smartphones for Aadhaar services, rather than going through the trouble of visiting Aadhaar enrolment or update centers. From updating contact information to getting e-Aadhaar and controlling biometric authentication, the app has become a necessary tool for the citizens under the umbrella of Digital India.

As per the statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Aadhaar app has now become a comprehensive identity management solution, which enables people to perform a number of important activities related to Aadhaar.

Aadhaar App Becomes a One-Stop Platform for Identity Services

In recent times, the Aadhaar application has evolved from merely being a digital identity verification tool to become a platform where Aadhaar data can be fully managed by users. The app now allows one to download the e-Aadhaar, update personal data, manage security settings, verify credentials and also undertake a number of identity-based transactions without needing to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center.

This smartphone-enabled method is making the process less paper-filled and queue-free, and also enabling the citizens to manage their Aadhaar data conveniently at any time and from anywhere.

Millions of Aadhaar Updates Completed Through the App

The government data indicates that the users have readily adopted the use of this application to update the details related to their Aadhaar account.

In the time since the launch of this application, it has been successful in helping to process 11.65 lakh address updates so far, where the residents have been able to update the Aadhaar details without needing any physical verification processes.

It has further helped users in getting 49 lakh mobile number updates to their Aadhaar accounts. The mobile number is very important for users as they get OTP authentication using this mobile number.

Email Update Feature Sees Strong Early Adoption

Amongst the recent enhancements to the Aadhaar app is one that enables the user to update or add their email address directly from the app. The enhancement became available on 1 July 2026 and its adoption has so far proven impressive.

Based on the statistics released by the government, there have been 12.5 lakhs email addresses added or updated so far with the use of this feature.

The government has further made a move to promote the adoption of this feature by waiving the normal charges of ₹75 that apply when updating emails on the app till the end of 2026.

Biometric Lock Feature Continues to Gain Popularity

Other than the updation of profiles, security has become one of the main reasons for the increasing popularity of the Aadhaar app.

According to government data, more than 1.91 crore uses of the Aadhaar application’s biometric lock and unlock function by Aadhaar users have been recorded. This feature helps in locking biometrics in such a way that the user does not get authenticated by anyone else.

Whenever there is a need for biometric authentication, users can unlock their biometrics and lock them right after that.

Digital India Initiative Driving Mobile-First Governance

Government officials consider the 4 crore download figure to be an indication of growing trust in digital identities among citizens, which is also consistent with the larger vision of Digital India.

With mobile phones being the main means of access to government services, digital services like Aadhaar have greatly decreased dependency on service centers for updating and verification procedures. This not only makes things easier for citizens but also increases the efficiency of providing services.

It is likely that the trend of mobile-first governance will be followed going forward.

This particular milestone serves as a testament to how quickly the digital identity space in India is developing. In light of having 4 crore downloads, close to 49 lakh mobile number changes, more than 11.65 lakh address changes, close to 12.5 lakh email changes, and more than 1.91 crore biometric lock and unlock requests, the Aadhaar application has established itself to be one of the most popular digital government service apps in the country.

In light of continued digital governance initiatives, it is expected that the Aadhaar application will serve a greater purpose going forward.
