Apple Reportedly Approves iPhone Ultra 2 Ahead of First Foldable Launch

Apple is reportedly already developing the iPhone Ultra 2 even before its first foldable iPhone launches. A new leak also suggests the future of the iPhone Air lineup depends on the success of the upcoming Air 2.
Even if Apple hasn't officially unveiled its first-ever foldable iPhone just yet, recent reports indicate that the company already has a plan after that device launches. Indeed, according to a new leak originating from China, Apple apparently already gave internal approval for the development of the second generation of the iPhone Ultra, reflecting the company's optimism about the future of the foldable smartphone market.
The latest report comes from renowned Chinese Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, who revealed that the iPhone Ultra 2 is apparently approved by Apple for development. If the leak turns out to be true, it would reflect Apple's commitment to the foldable category of smartphones.
Apple Already Looking Beyond Its First Foldable iPhone
Unlike other brands like Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, and Vivo, which developed their foldable smartphones, Apple adopted an approach of being cautious about foldable iPhones. For quite some time now, it seems that Apple has spent several years developing its design, build quality, and user experience before releasing its foldable device.

However, even before the launch of the company's first foldable smartphone in this year, news claims that Apple has given the green light for developing its next generation.
As per Digital Chat Station, the next-generation iPhone Ultra is said to have a broader folding screen compared to the first-generation iPhone Ultra. It also mentions that it is possible that Apple will continue using the same display panel while working on the aspect ratio of the screen.
All the information mentioned above is unofficial for the time being, but it is consistent with the traditional approach of Apple.
First Foldable iPhone Moves Closer to Production
The leak is accompanied by separate reports which indicate that the first ever foldable iPhone from Apple has now reached its last developmental stages before mass manufacturing.
It is said that in the wake of completing thorough validation testing, Apple has completed validation of several important components. According to The Elec, a publication based on supply chains, these components include the foldable display, chassis design, and mechanical structures which took several years of development.
Apart from that, according to the report, Apple has successfully concluded its first round of pilot production in April. Foxconn will be responsible for launching mass production if everything goes accordingly in the remaining part of the month of July.
One of the most difficult issues throughout the entire project of Apple's first foldable phone has been reported as the hinge mechanism. Previous reports indicated that Apple had delayed its launch due to durability issues with the mechanism. However, the latest supply chain report revealed that Apple has overcome the majority of engineering hurdles in order to start mass production of its new device.
iPhone Air Lineup Faces an Uncertain Future
In contrast to Apple's increasing aggressiveness about its foldable plans, the firm's line of ultra-thin phones seems to have a less promising future ahead.
According to the aforementioned information, Apple hasn't even started working on the development of the iPhone Air 3. Rather, the corporation wants to study the sales performance of the upcoming iPhone Air 2 that is going to come out together with the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in the spring of next year. If the performance turns out to be worse than expected by Apple, the firm may completely drop the Air series.
The ultra-thin phones, unlike foldables, haven't yet proved themselves on the market. Although people like to show their admiration towards the technical achievements, it isn't clear whether people want a thinner device rather than a bigger battery, a cooler system, or a better camera.

But the most shocking thing about the recent leak is the fact that the company is supposedly confident enough to approve a second generation of foldable phones even before its first model becomes available to users.
In the meantime, the future of iPhone Air seems to rest solely in the hands of users. And if Apple's Air 2 fails to sell enough units, it seems likely that the company will concentrate its premium product development efforts on folding gadgets rather than ultrathin smartphones.
As it often happens with leaks, you have to take everything here with a grain of salt until Apple gives out the official statement. But according to the leaks that are currently going on, this might be one of the greatest changes in the history of iPhone development since the launch of iPhone X.
