Fable Delayed to February 2027 as Xbox Avoids GTA 6 Clash and Reshuffles Release Plans

Xbox has delayed the highly anticipated Fable reboot to February 2027, moving the fantasy RPG away from an increasingly crowded 2026 release calendar that includes GTA 6, Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Here's everything we know about the delay and what it means for Xbox fans.

Fable

Finally, after years of waiting, Xbox gamers will have to endure a few more months until they enter the fantastical realm of Fable, as the much-awaited sequel to the renowned RPG franchise has been officially announced to be delayed and launched in February 2027.

The game had been slated to launch in the fall of 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S. Although Xbox had not divulged an exact release date, Fable had been considered one of the most anticipated launches of Microsoft in the second part of the year. However, it seems as though the company is making changes to its release plans in view of an unusually packed gaming schedule.

Xbox Wants Fable to Have Its Own Moment

As stated via Xbox's social media account, the postponement of Fable from November to February 2027 will help the company to better structure its list of forthcoming titles, as well as provide Fable with much-needed attention.

As reported by Xbox, 2026 is set to become one of the busiest years ever in terms of Xbox releases. This year will see the releases of Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and, possibly, the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI.

Xbox claims that the postponement of Fable until February 2027 will help the title shine in its own right without having to vie for attention against many other high-profile games in a very busy period. Additionally, Xbox announced that the RPG's release date was shifted to give fans an extended sneak peek during the Xbox Games Showcase set to occur on June 7.

Though this news may be disappointing for many fans, it also means that Microsoft is confident in this game. Instead of forcing it into a release period filled with games, it gave Playground Games all the time and space necessary for polishing the title.

The GTA 6 Factor Looms Large

While Microsoft hasn't stated explicitly that Grand Theft Auto VI was responsible for this decision, many people believe that the next major game from Rockstar Games is affecting release plans in the gaming world.

In October, industry analyst Jeff Grubb noted that some Xbox executives were worried that launching Fable too soon before the release of GTA 6 would prove problematic. Back then, he claimed that even if Microsoft continued with their initial plans, internally there were talks about switching dates if issues arose with the release schedule.

Now, it looks like those predictions have proven accurate. GTA VI will dominate the gaming scene when it finally hits the market on November 19, 2026. Most of the companies aren't willing to launch another blockbuster title around the same time since they know that GTA 6 is going to grab everyone's attention for the following months.

Considering this from a business standpoint, moving Fable's release date is a smart decision. Even a well-anticipated RPG will struggle against another well-anticipated game from one of the leading studios in the world.

A Busy Future for Xbox

Even with the postponement of Fable, the Xbox release calendar looks absolutely amazing.

The company is still working on a number of games set for an imminent release, even though the majority of them still don't have specific dates. Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day still seem like some of the most promising releases from first-party publishers, but InXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution and State of Decay 3 by Undead Labs also draw a lot of attention.

Of course, the development of the horror game titled OD by the famous game designer Hideo Kojima under Xbox also deserves much attention. Certainly, the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase should give more details about Microsoft's plans for the coming two years. Given that both Fable and Gears of War: E-Day are among the titles scheduled for release, this conference may well go down as one of the most important for Xbox.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Arrives This October

While Fable might be looking towards 2027, Xbox and Activision have not finished releasing their game in 2021.

Activision just revealed its upcoming game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, slated to come out on October 23. This title continues to be an incredibly popular game and is expected to make up an important part of the Xbox gaming line for the holidays.

With the release of Modern Warfare 4, it becomes easier to understand why Microsoft may have been forced to stagger its releases. Having numerous hit games released at once would likely cause overlap in the amount of attention they get.

Why Fable Remains One of Xbox's Most Important Games

Although its existence was announced some time ago, Fable is another attempt to revive one of the most loved role-playing franchises from Xbox. Fable's development is assigned to Playground Games, a developer that gained recognition through their award-winning Forza Horizon games. The idea behind Fable is not only to make the old fantasy RPG more relevant but also keep its spirit – charm, sense of humor, and unique British style.

It seems that new features recently unveiled by the developers only boost fans' enthusiasm about the upcoming release. One of such features is that Fable will include around 1,000 voiced NPCs making the world of the game even more vibrant and interactive.

However, there is one particular feature that became widely discussed among gamers. Namely, players will be able to marry almost any NPC that meets certain conditions, providing them with unique opportunities.

All above-mentioned features suggest that Microsoft considers Fable a long-standing flagship RPG franchise.

Waiting a Little Longer Could Be Worth It

No gamer loves hearing news about game delays; especially not when it comes to a title that has been years in the making. Yet, again and again, the modern gaming industry has proven the importance of providing developers with additional time to work on their creations.

From a company perspective, delaying Fable seems like the best choice for Xbox at the moment. It helps avoid direct competition with Grand Theft Auto VI, cuts down competition within their lineup, and allows the devs at Playground Games more development time.

As February 2027 might seem like a long way from now, the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase will certainly provide gamers with some clarity regarding the next title in the legendary fantasy franchise.

As for now, Fable is still one of the key games in Xbox's future and, once released, Microsoft intends to make sure that the title gets all the attention it deserves.
