Free Fire India Returns After Four Years With Local Features and Parental Controls
Garena has launched Free Fire India for Android and iOS with India-specific features, parental controls, spending limits and local data storage. The return could boost competition with BGMI and create new opportunities for Indian esports players.

Free Fire is now back in India as Garena has launched a locally modified version of the company’s highly rated battle royale game. Named Free Fire India, the stand-alone game app for Android and iOS users includes several India-specific features such as parental control, time-limit settings, spending restrictions, and localization of data on the device. This is four years after the ban imposed on Free Fire in India in February 2022, citing security concerns of the country.
This is a big milestone for Garena as the company attempts to get back into the huge mobile gaming market. According to the company, owned by Singaporean technology and gaming firm Sea, it collaborated with the respective government agencies of India in the creation of the locally modified game. However, no clear reason has been provided regarding why Garena had delayed the previously announced launch of the game this year.
Free Fire India Introduces Features Designed for Indian Players
Free Fire India is now available as a distinct version of the battle royale game with special features catering to the requirements of the Indian gaming market. This version comes with features such as parental control to enable parents to monitor the activities of their kids while playing, time limit restrictions, and spending limits to make gamers aware of proper gaming practices.
This will assist the company in building a strong rapport with the gamers of India, while dealing with problems associated with gaming behaviors and spending limits. In addition to this, it will also prove helpful for protecting the user data on servers located in India, thus catering to the issue of user data security.
Why Was Free Fire Banned in India?
Free Fire was one of the topmost downloaded games from India prior to the recent government ban on 54 games, including Free Fire, in February 2022. This move came after the banning of PUBG Mobile by the Indian government in September 2020, thereby creating room for Free Fire to be downloaded more in the country.
The ban greatly affected Garena's parent company, Sea. After the news was released, there was a huge loss in the market capitalization of Sea, which amounted to over $16 billion within a day. In spite of this situation, Garena did not leave the Indian market entirely.
This was through the availability of Free Fire MAX, which was not included in the ban. The game continued to cater to the players from India when Free Fire India launch was halted.
Free Fire India and Free Fire MAX Will Coexist
According to Garena, Free Fire MAX will remain operational along with Free Fire India. As per Vaibhav Das Mundhra, the head of operations of Garena in India, users will be able to utilize the same account in both games, play together, and take part in common events.
Such a policy makes the changeover process much simpler for Free Fire MAX fans as they can enjoy the localized game without losing touch with the broader gaming community. Moreover, Garena can keep the current gamers while launching the new game version with features customized for Indian audiences.
The fact of continuing the operation of Free Fire MAX is especially vital since Indian players have been playing the updated version of the game for years after the withdrawal of the original one.
Free Fire Franchise Remains Ahead of BGMI in India
This re-launch happens at a time when there is still rivalry in the Indian mobile battle royale gaming market between Garena and South Korean publisher, Krafton, who created Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI).
Following the ban on PUBG Mobile, Krafton launched BGMI, which was aimed at being a more Indianized version of it. The Free Fire game franchise has enjoyed significant advantage in the number of its audience base.
According to TechCrunch report based on Sensor Tower data, the Free Fire game franchise was having around 77.4 million monthly active users in India in June as opposed to 20.8 million of BGMI.
Garena Continued Developing Games for India During the Ban
Even though the first Free Fire had not yet come back into circulation, Garena was constantly putting effort into developing the Indian gaming industry. By way of its studios located in Pune and Mumbai, it worked on developing games based on Hindu mythological themes, cricket, and the classic board game Ludo. Some of these games were released even before the return of Free Fire was confirmed.
Versus is one of those games which had been accessible through early access on Google Play at one point but is currently not listed there anymore. It shows how Garena works on creating games that relate to Indian culture rather than its famous battle royale games.
Now that Free Fire India is back, Garena has another chance of building its presence in India.
India's Mobile Gaming Market Continues to Grow
India is one of the significant markets for mobile game publishers, owing to high smartphone penetration and a significant number of mobile-first gamers. According to the data published by Sensor Tower, mobile game downloads in India surged by 14.2% quarter over quarter to reach 2 billion in Q2 2026. The revenue also saw growth by 3.7% and reached $106 million in Q2 2026.
This shows the business prospects of the gaming industry in India. In this regard, the launch of Free Fire India could offer new opportunities to attract players and engage them in the gaming ecosystem of Garena.
Free Fire franchise also maintains popularity in the field of competitive gaming. Indian teams such as S8UL Esports, Apex Gaming, and Total Gaming took part in Free Fire MAX at the Esports World Cup 2026.
Esports Players and Content Creators Could Benefit
But there is a chance that the revival of Free Fire India could offer some benefits not only to average players but also to esports players, streamers, gaming influencers, and other creators.
Co-founder, and CEO of S8UL Esports Animesh Agarwal said that Free Fire India would provide an opportunity to create more openings in the gaming space. He noted that the game would benefit not only the game itself but also those who aspire to become professional players, existing creator communities, and the career of competitive gaming.
There could be a lot of opportunities related to local tournaments, streaming, community events, and any content related to gaming with the appearance of the localized game and the huge number of potential users. Nevertheless, the extent of these openings would depend on the growth of the player base of Free Fire India.
Free Fire India's Return Marks a New Chapter for Garena
The arrival of Free Fire India marks a major comeback by one of the best-known mobile game franchises in India. The local game, which comes with features such as parent control, spending limitations, and localized servers, shows that Garena has decided to adopt a localized approach.
Allowing both versions, namely Free Fire and Free Fire MAX, to coexist may also be a great way for the company to retain its existing customer base and win some additional users who are interested in playing the localized version. However, the established fan base and growing mobile gaming industry in India give solid ground for the future success of the franchise.
Even though there may be some uncertainty regarding the game's previous launch delay and its prospects for further development, Free Fire India can become a game-changer in the local battle royale industry.
