Jio has made its affordable 4G recharge plans available for Lava, Itel, and Nokia feature phones in India. The Rs 123 prepaid plan offers unlimited calls, 0.5GB daily data, 300 SMS, and 28 days validity, bringing cheaper connectivity options to millions of 4G feature phone users.

The telecom sector in India has quickly adopted the trend of offering smartphones with 5G capabilities, but there are several million customers who are dependent on their 4G feature phones at affordable recharge packages. In an effort to cater to such customers, Jio has now extended some of its affordable recharge packages for use on other brands of affordable 4G feature phones besides its JioPhone and JioBharat offerings. According to reports, this affordable 4G recharge service is now available on feature phones offered by brands such as Lava International, itel India, and HMD Global Nokia Phones.
This development may turn out to be a boon for several million budget-conscious Indians who prefer to use their feature phones for making calls and even browsing the web.
Jio’s Affordable 4G Plans Are No Longer Limited to JioPhone Users
Earlier, Jio’s cheap feature phone recharge options were limited to feature phones like the JioPhone and JioBharat. Individuals using 4G feature phones from other companies had to opt for normal prepaid recharge options, which usually prove to be costlier than the former.
The trend seems to be taking a turn, though. Media reports claim that individuals using feature phones from Lava, Itel, and Nokia are able to recharge their phones using the affordable plans made available only to the Jio family earlier.
This is very crucial, considering that these recharge plans ensure basic connectivity at substantially reduced costs when compared to prepaid packages offered by other players like Airtel India and Vi India.
Jio Rs 123 Recharge Plan Benefits
One of the most attractive plans now reportedly available for third-party 4G feature phones is Jio’s Rs 123 prepaid plan. Despite its low pricing, the plan offers a decent bundle of benefits for everyday users.
Jio Rs 123 Plan Includes:
28 days validity
Unlimited voice calling
0.5GB 4G data per day
300 SMS for the entire validity period
For users who mainly use their phones for calls, WhatsApp, UPI payments, and light browsing, this recharge plan offers excellent value. Competing telecom operators often price their entry-level unlimited plans closer to Rs 200, making Jio’s offering considerably more affordable.
TRAI’s Role Behind the Change
Jio’s decision may also be linked to recent directions and observations made by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The regulator had reportedly stated that telecom tariff plans should not remain restricted to specific devices because such practices could create market inequality.
By opening these plans to feature phones from multiple brands, Jio appears to be moving toward a more inclusive strategy that benefits a wider range of consumers rather than limiting affordable plans to its own hardware ecosystem.
This shift could also encourage healthier competition in the affordable feature phone segment.
Why This Matters for Indian Consumers
While premium smartphones and 5G services dominate headlines, feature phones still remain relevant in India. Reports indicate that there are still around 35 to 40 million active 4G feature phone users across the country.
Many users in rural regions, older demographics, and first-time internet users continue to prefer feature phones because of:
Lower device costs
Longer battery life
Simpler user experience
Reliable calling functionality
Better durability
Additionally, 5G connectivity is still expanding in many areas, which means affordable 4G connectivity remains crucial for millions of users.
By allowing cheaper recharge plans on more devices, Jio is effectively lowering the barrier to digital connectivity for a large section of the population.
More Choices for 4G Feature Phone Buyers
Such a step would also have an indirect positive effect on the feature phone brands such as Lava, Itel, and Nokia. There is no need anymore to buy the Jio branded phones for opting for cheaper Jio recharges.
Rather, consumers have more options in choosing among several 4G feature phones at low cost. This could be very advantageous for a number of customers particularly seniors and second-hand mobile phone buyers.
The introduction of cheap 4G mobile data packages by Jio on devices from Lava, Itel, and Nokia is indeed a notable development for the Indian economy, especially with the ongoing increase in prepaid charges. At present, a Rs 123 package providing free calls and 4G internet access is bound to impact many users positively.
Despite the fact that India has taken major steps towards 5G, the substantial number of 4G feature phone subscribers clearly illustrates that affordability is still an important aspect.
