Meta Launches Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus Subscriptions With Premium Features

Meta has officially introduced Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus subscriptions with premium features including advanced Story insights, customisation tools, audience controls, and creator-focused analytics. The new paid plans signal Meta’s growing push toward subscription-based social media services beyond ads and Meta Verified.

Meta Plus subscription

Meta is making its way towards a subscription-based model of social media platforms in its official statement. While earlier, the firm was concentrated largely on advertisements and the paid verification process through Meta Verified. Now the tech giant has launched another subscription-based service through Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus.

It is a clear indicator of the strategic shift in the plan by Meta. Instead of following a single path of advertisement to earn revenues from its applications, Meta is now planning to earn through subscriptions that will come from power users, creators, influencers, and even business organizations, who invest lots of hours using these platforms every day.

As claimed by Meta, the pricing structure for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus subscription plans will be set to $3.99 every month, i.e., nearly Rs 380 in the country. At the same time, the WhatsApp Plus package will be less expensive as it will be priced at just $2.99 per month, i.e., roughly Rs 290. It can be seen that the subscription plans are rolled out across the world, albeit in phases.

Instagram Plus Gets the Biggest Upgrade

Among all three options, Instagram Plus seems to be currently the one that has the most number of features available. It is clear that the platform is aiming at creators and those users who rely on Instagram Stories and analytics in order to grow their followers.

Firstly, one of the most significant changes is improved Story insights. From now on, users will be able to view the number of times people have rewatched certain Stories. In addition, there will be searchable viewer lists that should make tracking user behaviour and interaction much easier.

Moreover, the subscription brings some improvements to the Story controls that regular Instagram users can’t use yet. One of the main changes is that now there are no limits in creating audience lists, even the ones that are not associated with the Close Friends option.

Duration control for the Stories is another innovation that Meta will add to its package of features. Unlike the regular stories that disappear in 24 hours, the Instagram Plus subscription offers users extended periods during which their Stories can stay alive. One interesting and definitely eye-catching feature would be the ability to preview Stories anonymously, meaning that one's ID will not be shown from the very beginning. In addition, there is a possibility of highlighting one story per week.

Customisation Features Aim to Make Profiles Stand Out

Apart from the analytics and Story controls, there are many profile customisation features available on Instagram Plus which could help users customise their profiles aggressively.

These include font options for profiles, extra profile pins, animated “Super Hearts,” and alternative application icons. Although it may appear as small cosmetic changes initially, it seems that Meta is making an attempt to build an entire premium social networking experience for users, similar to Snapchat Plus.

The most intriguing thing about this feature list, however, is that users will be able to share posts to their profile and highlights, and these will not be added to followers' feed by default.

Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus Focus on Different Audiences

While most of the focus has been directed towards Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus will provide a similar experience that includes audience-focused tools, profile personalization, and interaction control options.

It looks like Meta wants to cater to creators, community managers, and businesses that continue using Facebook for audiences and brand building purposes. Additional personalization and visibility tools may eventually prove crucial for pages and creators looking to stay active on Facebook.

At the same time, WhatsApp Plus offers some unique advantages that revolve around personalization. With this paid version of the app, subscribers will get custom themes, special ringtones, premium stickers, additional pinned chats, and improved list management features.

Despite being much simpler than Facebook and Instagram, Meta seems to be ready to transform WhatsApp into a more premium messaging application with extra options and functionality for those who are ready to pay extra.

Meta Verified Will Remain Separate For Now

However, Meta has confirmed that the new Plus subscriptions will stay independent from the existing Meta Verified program for now. This implies that customers who subscribe to the Meta Verified program will not get access to Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus features automatically.

The current Meta Verified program is primarily centered on account verification, impersonation protection, customer support, and account safety. The future Plus subscriptions, on the other hand, will concentrate on premium features, audience insights, reach capabilities, and platform customization. Additionally, the company may consider introducing different subscription tiers into its ecosystem.

Meta One Could Become Meta’s Bigger Subscription Ecosystem

Surprisingly, Meta is already making preparations for something bigger behind the scenes. Meta is currently said to be developing a more comprehensive subscription platform referred to as Meta One.

The new all-encompassing subscription platform will incorporate artificial intelligence-based functionalities, creation toolkits, analytics, moderation, and algorithms promoting posts among others. The next-generation creator-centric subscriptions could potentially feature increased visibility on Facebook and Instagram, enhanced professional dashboard interfaces, and improved audience management functions.

In light of the role artificial intelligence plays in social media platforms, it is evident that Meta is keen to integrate artificial intelligence into their subscription model as well as the monetization and social functionalities for creators.

India Rollout Still Awaited

For now, there have been no official announcements by Meta regarding the prices for these subscription services and their release dates in India. But the roll-out is likely to take place slowly via the apps themselves.

Once these subscription plans get rolled out in an area, users will see them as an option right within the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms.

Given the sheer size of the creator economy and the flourishing influencer community, India is very likely to turn into one of the key markets for these subscription services for Meta.

Will Users Actually Pay For These Features?

That is the big question. Meta is coming into an arena where people have been paying for their subscriptions to other streaming services, cloud storages, AI software, and other productivity services monthly.

It has already been proved by other platforms such as Snapchat Plus that there is a legitimate demand from customers regarding premium services in social media applications, especially among the youth who prefer exclusiveness and customization. Yet, Meta needs to convince people that its advanced services including controlling options, visibility services, and customized profile make sense for extra money.

For businesspeople, marketers, and even other types of influencers who are totally reliant on the use of stories on Instagram and their analysis, these subscription services can be helpful indeed. However, casual users may find themselves struggling to justify spending on subscription services for cosmetic purposes and added sticker packs. The majority of users will probably want to see how Meta develops these subscriptions in the next few months before the official launch of the Meta One ecosystem.

With the new Plus subscriptions, Meta wants to make sure that people understand something social media might soon become an expensive commodity.
