Mivi Smartphone Teased on Flipkart, Marking the Audio Brand’s Entry into India’s Phone Market

Mivi is all set to enter India’s smartphone market with its first handset. The Flipkart teaser reveals its design, while launch date, specs and pricing are still under wraps. Read on for all the latest details.

Mivi Smartphone

It looks like the Indian brand, Mivi, is preparing itself for a big expansion into markets other than audio products because it is set to release a smartphone. There is a teaser launched by the company on Flipkart that gives a sneak peek into Mivi’s first smartphone. However, till now, Mivi hasn’t revealed the name of the product, its price tag, specifications or launch date. The teaser displays only the partial view of the device.

According to the teaser, Mivi’s first smartphone will be available exclusively on Flipkart at least in its initial phase of launch. The phone comes in green shade and looks quite stylish with simple design. From the limited information obtained from the teaser, it can be said that the smartphone has a flat back with round edges and hence possesses a conventional smartphone design. Though, nothing concrete about the hardware can be known from the teaser, but the online launch approach gives a hint that Mivi’s first phone could be priced competitively.

Mivi has made its mark in India with the help of low-cost audio products, such as true wireless earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, and even other devices that use artificial intelligence technology. Transitioning to smartphones would be a big strategic shift for the company because smartphones are one of the most fiercely competitive consumer electronics segments in the country. There are already major companies in this segment, which are well-connected with their own networks, software ecosystems, service centers, and experience in the industry, making it difficult for Mivi to win with price alone.

The company’s preparation indicates that Mivi’s move towards smartphones is a sincere plan. The company has appointed Himanshu Tandon, who has worked with brands like POCO and CMF by Nothing. His experience in the smartphone industry may help Mivi in formulating its product strategy and entering the intensely competitive smartphone market of India.

Curiously, the launch of the Mivi smartphone coincides with that of Fire-Boltt in the sector. In fact, Fire-Boltt has recently launched its new brand Boltt which includes the Boltt Evo 4G and Boltt Ace 5G in India. Both companies seem to follow a similar strategy that involves targeting the online customers, providing competitive pricing, and using Flipkart as a significant channel of distribution.

The Boltt brand has already disclosed that its smartphones will be marketed in the under-Rs 20,000 price segment, and the starting price of the Boltt Evo 4G is Rs 9,999. The phones come with the stock-like Android system without any bloatware. Thus, there is yet another feature that allows Boltt to compete with its well-established rivals. It remains to be seen whether the Mivi smartphone will have a similar strategy when it comes to the software side.

Where does Mivi fit in the highly competitive smartphone market?

The arrival of Mivi into the market is timely in relation to the Indian Smartphone industry. Large brands like OPPO, Vivo, Realme, among others, are providing more and more advanced 4G/5G smartphones in the low-cost and mid-segment of the market. This may be accompanied by a price increase in certain categories due to rising component prices, especially due to the rising prices of memory.

This environment might give a chance to new brands like Mivi and Boltt. If they are able to maintain competitive prices and good hardware, software, and usability experience, then they may attract customers who are looking for affordable alternatives to the regular Smartphone brands. Nonetheless, pricing might not be enough alone.

The aspect of after-sales support may turn out to be the biggest challenge for Mivi. Smartphones are much more complicated devices than earbuds and Bluetooth speakers, and consumers need instant access to the service centers, spare parts, software updates, and components. Establishing trust in this regard is equally significant as offering a good launch price.

The issue of software support may be very significant as well. Modern consumers are much more interested in the number of Android updates, security patches, and the software experience offered by smartphones. By providing a user-friendly interface with long-term software support, Mivi may have an edge over its competitors.

At present, the manufacturer has chosen to keep most of the information regarding its first ever smartphone under wraps. However, the teaser released by Flipkart indicates that the company is gearing up to venture into the smartphone market. The name of the smartphone, its specifications, including processor, camera features, screen specifications, battery capacity, software, and pricing details have yet to be known. With the official launch of the product on the horizon, we can expect more information regarding how the manufacturer plans to place its first smartphone in India.

The manufacturer has made a name for itself in the affordable audio products category. It remains to be seen whether the same brand awareness will prove successful in the smartphone industry. The company needs to offer an effective combination of aggressive pricing, good hardware, software and customer service support.
