OpenAI Launches GPT-OSS Bringing Free Open-Weight AI Models for Everyone

OpenAI has taken a bold step towards democratizing AI by launching GPT-OSS, a new open-weight family of models available for free download, customization, and commercial use under the Apache 2.0 license. This launch represents a notable step toward making cutting-edge AI technology more available to developers, researchers, and companies globally. Unlike many AI models that come with restrictive licensing and paywall barriers, GPT-OSS gives innovators the freedom to experiment, build, and deploy AI solutions without limitations.

The GPT-OSS family comes in two variants, each catering to different needs. The first is the GPT-OSS 120B, a massive 120-billion-parameter model that delivers performance comparable to OpenAI’s o4-mini. Even with its immense size, it is optimized to work on a single Nvidia GPU and even incorporates an adversarially fine-tuned version for enhanced safety assessment. This renders it a great option for researchers and business enterprises that need large-scale AI features but still desire hardware efficiency. The second model, GPT-OSS 20B, is a smaller 20-billion-parameter model that is on par in performance with o3-mini and can be efficiently used on local devices with only 16GB of VRAM, making it suitable for smaller teams, solo developers, or whoever prefers high-quality AI without having to invest in costly infrastructure.
Both models come preloaded with advanced features. They enable few-shot function calling for more accurate and dynamic API integrations. They include chain-of-thought reasoning to generate deeper, step-by-step logical responses for larger tasks. They are also capable of handling HealthBench tasks, which makes them applicable in AI-based healthcare solutions. OpenAI has further optimized these models via native MXFP4 quantization to ensure effective local memory usage without compromising performance levels.
The availability of GPT-OSS spans across multiple platforms, making adoption easier than ever. Developers can access the models through Hugging Face, Databricks, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). For those who prefer to test before deploying, GPT-OSS is also accessible via OpenAI’s online playground. Microsoft has taken an extra step by introducing a GPU-optimized version of the GPT-OSS-20B model specifically for Windows PCs. This release is available via Foundry Local and the AI Toolkit for Visual Studio Code, offering Windows developers a convenient setup to bring GPT-OSS into their own projects.
To ensure that developers can adopt GPT-OSS quickly and effectively, OpenAI has released several open-source tools alongside the models. These include a harmony renderer written in both Python and Rust for improved output formatting and reference implementations for PyTorch and Apple’s Metal to support diverse development environments. Furthermore, GPT-OSS models are fully compatible with OpenAI’s Responses API, making integration into existing workflows seamless.
The release of GPT-OSS is not merely another AI launch; it's a declaration about open innovation's future.
