What You need to Know
PlayStation Plus subscription prices are increasing for new users starting May 20 in select regions.
Sony says “ongoing market conditions” are behind the latest PS Plus price hike.
Gamers have criticized the decision, especially ahead of the expected GTA 6 launch boom.
Sony expects gaming profits to rise despite declining PS5 hardware sales globally.

Sony has confirmed that another price hike will be implemented by the company concerning the PlayStation Plus subscription service. The new price levels will take effect starting May 20 for all new subscriptions in selected regions, while the gaming community does not seem pleased with this change. Considering the ongoing rise in costs concerning hardware and software in the gaming industry, the new price change will make the PlayStation Plus subscription service more expensive than ever for millions of PS4 and PS5 players across the globe.
This decision comes at an interesting time for the gaming industry since the release date of the long-awaited game, Grand Theft Auto VI GTA 6, is approaching. Many gamers feel like Sony is taking advantage of the situation, knowing that a large number of gamers are about to join their ecosystem soon.
PlayStation Plus Subscription Prices Are Increasing
As Sony announced, the PlayStation Plus subscription prices for new customers will go up due to "ongoing market conditions." The new price range will apply to one-month and three-month plans in several regions.
Now, the new pricing will start from:
$10.99 USD for a 1-month plan
€9.99 EUR for Europe
£7.99 GBP for the UK
In turn, the price for a three-month plan is set to be:
$27.99 USD
€27.99 EUR
£21.99 GBP
This means that the monthly subscription will be $1 more expensive than before, while a three-month one will see an increment of $3. Though such changes might seem minor on the surface, gamers often complain about how expensive gaming subscriptions, console equipment, and AAA games have become altogether.
It should be mentioned that existing users won't be affected by the changes, unless they expire, lapse, or change tiers in most regions. However, people from India and Turkey might expect additional costs despite being active users of the service, which has been criticized by the community.
Gaming Is Becoming More Expensive Across the Industry
The increase in the PlayStation Plus subscription fee is just one of many trends affecting the whole gaming industry at the moment. In recent years, due to rising inflation rates, the shortage of semiconductors, and the problems with global supply chains, the companies had to reconsider their pricing strategies when it comes to hardware and software.
Sony itself has also raised the price of PS5 consoles in some markets, stating “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the reason for doing so. Besides, Sony mentioned that due to the growing AI demand for the advanced memory components, there may be future problems with pricing and production of gaming hardware.
It is noteworthy that Sony recently admitted that the company has not yet decided on the exact launch date or pricing strategy for the upcoming PlayStation 6. The current situation is thus demonstrating the complexity of the gaming industry as far as manufacturers try to balance between their rising production expenses and customers’ demands.
On the other hand, the competitors’ approaches were somewhat different, with many PlayStation fans noticing that Microsoft has recently lowered prices for some Xbox Game Pass services.
Fans Criticize Sony Over the Decision
Not surprisingly, the news prompted an immediate backlash on various gaming forums and social media sites. Many PlayStation owners felt that charging a fee for online multiplayer gaming was already a controversial practice, and the additional price rise made the issue even more difficult.
Many players asked why PlayStation users should be required to pay subscription fees for using online functions in their already bought full-price games. Some were upset with Sony's argument regarding "ongoing market conditions" in face of competing subscription services trying to become more competitive.
The discontent is especially clear among long-term PlayStation users who see no improvement in the general usefulness of PlayStation Plus despite its rising prices. While the service provides its users with a monthly downloadable game and some special discounts, many of them doubt whether the offered benefits are really worth all the price rises.
GTA 6 Could Be a Major Factor Behind the Timing
One of the main debates that have emerged in the wake of the said announcement is regarding the timing of the increase in the PlayStation Plus prices. The hike in the prices for the PlayStation Plus membership service is coming just weeks before the expected release of the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6).
The release of GTA 6 is expected to result in unprecedented hardware sales of PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. More importantly for Sony, a large number of gamers are likely to sign up for PlayStation Plus simply to play GTA Online.
At present, one needs to have an active PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play multiplayer games online on PlayStation consoles, which includes GTA Online. As of now, there have been no hints from Rockstar Games or Sony that the requirement of having an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play GTA Online will be waived upon the launch of GTA 6.
Therefore, it can be argued that Sony wants to announce the price increase prior to the release of GTA 6.
Sony’s Gaming Business Faces Mixed Financial Outlook
In spite of the price hike, Sony Gaming continues to operate in a complicated financial climate. According to the predictions, gaming sales for the year would fall by 6%, with an expected income of about 4.42 trillion yen, or $28 billion.
The reason for the decrease lies primarily in the drop in sales of gaming consoles as Sony PlayStation 5 will be in the market for its sixth year already. Rising prices for consoles could have a negative impact on sales in certain markets.
On the other hand, it can be said that the gaming profits of Sony would grow by 30%. This prediction is based primarily on high sales of first-party games and the absence of any significant losses connected with Bungie Bungie and its problematic Marathon project.
One of Sony's main advantages is its line of first-party games. Titles like Marvel's Wolverine Wolverine from Insomniac Games Insomniac Games should help increase engagement and revenue for the year.
The increase in PlayStation Plus cost for gamers only serves as a reminder of what has been happening in the industry for years now gaming is getting increasingly expensive. Premium games, console hardware, subscriptions, downloadable content, and even accessories all contribute to making being part of the PlayStation world more costly than before.
Nevertheless, Sony believes that the strength of its exclusives, brand loyalty, and the future impact of GTA 6 will ensure user satisfaction. The question is whether gamers will keep tolerating the rising prices or seek alternative gaming ecosystems such as Xbox or PC gaming.
One thing is sure with GTA 6 looming on the horizon and discussions about the new generation of consoles just around the corner, the rivalry between gaming titans is entering yet another vital stage.
