Spotify Launches Long-Awaited Lossless Audio Streaming for Premium Users

Following years of hype, promises, and constant delays, Spotify has finally made good on its pledge to provide lossless, high-fidelity music streaming to its paid subscribers. Audiophiles and music enthusiasts everywhere can now rejoice because Spotify has started rolling out support for CD-quality sound, which allows listeners to hear music the way it sounds best.

Spotify Lossless Audio Streaming: What You Need to Know

Spotify's new lossless streaming capability provides playback at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC quality. That is, music songs are streamed without the compression trade-offs which have been the norm in standard digital audio formats for decades. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is specifically created to reproduce tracks as they were recorded in the studio exactly, with every sound nuance and detail intact which compressed ones tend to lose.

The road to this point has been long and tortuous. The idea of a hi-fi dedicated tier was originally teased in 2021, but subsequent delays due to licensing issues and technical issues kept it in "coming soon" purgatory. Even Spotify CEO Daniel Ek himself acknowledged as recently as last year that the firm was in its "early days" of providing actual lossless sound.

Availability and How to Enable Lossless Streaming

Spotify's lossless audio launch is taking place in phases and is available across over 50 countries as of October. Major markets where the feature has gone live already include the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Premium users will receive an alert as soon as the feature is live for their account.

Spotify’s lossless audio rollout is happening in phases and covers more than 50 countries by October. Key markets where the feature is already live include the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Premium subscribers will get a notification as soon as the feature is available for their account.

Activating the lossless mode is simple:

  1. Open Spotify and head to Settings and Privacy.

  2. Go to Media Quality.

  3. Select “Lossless” for Wi-Fi, mobile data, and downloads.

Spotify emphasizes that lossless playback is supported across mobile devices, desktops, tablets, and a range of hardware devices that support Spotify Connect. Compatible brands include Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, among others. Further device support from Sonos and Amazon is expected to roll out next month.

Important Considerations for Lossless Streaming

While the introduction of lossless audio is exciting, there are a few important caveats to keep in mind:

  • The lossless setting must be activated individually on each device you use. There is no global account-wide switch.

  • Lossless files are much larger, so Spotify provides tools to help you monitor data usage more closely, especially important for mobile data plans.

  • Perhaps the biggest technical limitation is that Bluetooth cannot handle FLAC-quality audio properly due to bandwidth restrictions. To experience true lossless sound, Spotify strongly recommends using Spotify Connect. This method enables direct streaming to compatible speakers and sound systems like Bose, Yamaha, and Bluesound bypassing Bluetooth altogether and ensuring no loss in sound quality.

Spotify vs Rivals

Compared to its rivals, Spotify is certainly behind the lossless party. Apple Music has been providing lossless streaming for free since 2021, while Amazon Music made the HD plan free in 2019 after originally charging users. Spotify's delayed launch became a constant source of jokes and irritation among its fans throughout the years.

In spite of the lateness, Spotify is emphasizing that this rollout represents a big step ahead. The firm asserts that "nearly every track" in its enormous 100-million-song library is now available in lossless quality. Even though some lacunae may continue to exist, for the majority of users, this addition is a blessing and a major advancement over the normal compressed experience.

For audiophiles who have been waiting patiently or foot-tapping impatiently Spotify's lossless audio launch is finally arrived. Now is the ideal time to dig out those high-end headphones, double-check your settings, and revel in your favourite tracks in uncompressed studio-quality majesty.

Through this release, Spotify is not only competing with the competition but also confirming its commitment to providing users with the best music experience. Whether you are streaming at home, on the move, or listening to your favorite albums through a high-end speaker system, the future of music sounds clearer, richer, and more vibrant than ever.
