GTA VI Extended Look to Stream Exclusively on Netflix for Six Hours Before YouTube Release

Six hours of exclusive Netflix streaming rights to Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look have been locked. Check out below when and where to stream the latest GTA 6 preview prior to its YouTube debut.

GTA VI

Netflix is now trying a unique strategy by purchasing the temporary exclusive streaming rights for the next Grand Theft Auto VI preview, which is undoubtedly one of the biggest entertainment spectacles of the year. The video streaming platform will air an exclusive six-hour-long live stream of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, giving its users an opportunity to see an early preview of this highly anticipated title from Rockstar Games before the video is available for everyone via YouTube.

Though no financial details are available, the grandiose scale of the GTA VI phenomenon makes it quite possible that Netflix paid quite a lot of money for this short-lived exclusivity. What makes this deal unique is the exclusivity period of just six hours after which the video of the same extended preview will be posted by Rockstar Games on their official YouTube channel.

GTA VI Extended Look

The fans of Netflix have access to watch Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look starting from 3:00 p.m. ET on August 27, which is equivalent to 12:30 a.m. IST on August 28. The trailer will be exclusive to Netflix for six hours before its wider availability.

Netflix has already developed a landing page for the trailer, where fans can set the reminder for the trailer release. In this way, Netflix is going to promote the preview as a streaming event, which makes GTA VI trailer an unusual entry to its entertainment portfolio.

Once the exclusive window closes, the extended preview will be released by Rockstar Games on its YouTube channel on August 27 at 9:00 p.m. ET, or 6:30 a.m. IST on August 28. This means that once the trailer is made public, one does not need to be subscribed to Netflix to see the footage.

So people interested in watching the official GTA VI trailer do not have to pay extra for that and watch it for free on YouTube after six hours of exclusivity. Having such high expectations about the game release, the YouTube version will attract a huge audience instantly.

Netflix's Six-Hour GTA VI Gamble

The decision by Netflix to pay for the exclusivity rights on the trailer is definitely an odd one. As opposed to films and TV shows, trailers are supposed to attract people’s attention and make them watch the video. In this case, the company aims at turning the hype created around the GTA VI game into something that would be able to attract viewers temporarily to stream it.

The decision comes at quite an interesting point in terms of the company’s plans for the gaming market. Netflix used to be very ambitious regarding its entry into the gaming business and invested in the necessary studios, hired some developers, and worked on developing games itself. However, the ambitions have somewhat toned down recently.

Netflix bought Night School Studio, the creator of Oxenfree game, in 2021 and later started making serious steps towards hiring gamers. Indeed, the firm created an in-house AAA game development studio in 2022. However, after the promotion of Alan Taskan to the position of Netflix Games CEO in 2024, Netflix started closing and selling many of its gaming-related ventures.

Currently, the firm's approach to games is quite different from that described by the company a few years back. In other words, the firm's efforts are increasingly being directed towards partnerships and collaborations with outside studios.

GTA VI Is Big Enough to Make Netflix's Strategy Work

Nevertheless, there is one significant explanation for why Netflix's peculiar agreement on GTA VI is justified: Grand Theft Auto differs from any other game franchise in its uniqueness.

In contrast to other franchises, Rockstar Games does not need to work for several months preparing a hype regarding GTA VI, since the latter has already become a cultural sensation worldwide, and its fans discuss each trailer and screenshot of the game thoroughly. Even a short preview can earn several millions of views as well as a lot of buzz in social media and among the representatives of the gaming community.

Thus, GTA VI becomes one of the very few games which are able to transform trailers into the event. It would be impossible to attract such attention with a trailer of an ordinary game, regardless of the fact that it is temporarily exclusive for Netflix.

Consequently, it seems that the agreement in question is not related to Netflix's overall strategy in terms of gaming but to the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto franchise in particular.

Rockstar Pushes Back Against GTA VI Leaks

The extended preview from Rockstar comes at a very awkward moment for Rockstar Games. The release of GTA VI has been compromised due to a major leak featuring gameplay footage. In response, Rockstar is trying its best to pull out any illegal footage from the web.

For fans, this would be a perfect opportunity to view footage of GTA VI without having to resort to leaks. In the past, Rockstar has been known to keep everything related to its games under wraps and seems to want people to focus on officially released footage of GTA VI.

As a result, this upcoming preview will become even more important because of the current leak scenario. This way, fans will not be watching any unfinished footage but rather a professionally produced one.

GTA VI Release Date and Expected Price

Despite all the buzz about the trailer, the game still has some time to come out. It will be released on November 19 and its price is predicted to start from $80.

It is being created by Rockstar Games, and it will take the gamers to the fictional state of Leonida, which is Rockstar’s satire on Florida. As usual, the game will consist of the large-scale world and storyline associated with crime, but it will present two new protagonists and an even more realistic version of the universe from the GTA franchise.

Each look at the game is causing lots of interest, and it is supposed to remain that way with the extended preview of the video.

However, the most intriguing thing about this deal could turn out to be the ineffectiveness of exclusivity. Netflix receives an exclusivity window of six hours, after which Rockstar will release the preview for free on YouTube.

Given the modern-day social media landscape, there is no way that this period will be able to protect the video from being uploaded in various forms onto the web. Much of it would have been shared on social media long before YouTube releases its version.

Therefore, it is not quite clear how Netflix will be able to benefit from this exclusivity period considering the nature of the content involved. Netflix competes with YouTube for viewer attention for several hours only in order to share something that was going to be available for free.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that GTA VI is one of those relatively few entertainment franchises which can produce significant attention even with just an exclusively short-lived broadcast.

In the end, the Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look deal becomes yet another confirmation of how wide the streaming battle has become. While Netflix is not anymore only fighting for movies and TV audiences, it is now also prepared to invest in major gaming-related events as long as the franchise is strong enough. It would remain to be seen whether the six hours of GTA VI exclusivity will turn out to be an intelligent PR move or just a rather expensive one, however, there is one thing that is evident at the moment – whenever Rockstar shows something from GTA VI, the whole Internet is going to watch.
