Ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-exam scheduled for June 21, India has temporarily restricted Telegram and disabled its message-editing feature to prevent the spread of fake question paper leak claims. The NTA says the move aims to protect the integrity of the examination and shield students from fraud networks exploiting anxious aspirants.

Telegram, however, has taken an unprecedented step to temporarily ban itself in India before the NEET-UG 2026 re-exam. The step was prompted by efforts from the government to curb the spread of rumors, malpractices, and even allegations of question paper leakage, all associated with one of India's biggest and toughest medical entrance tests. The NEET-UG 2026 re-test will be held on June 21. According to the officials, these steps have been taken only to ensure a fair examination process.
As per the statement released by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the body responsible for administering the NEET examination, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has imposed restrictions on Telegram in India until June 22. Along with banning the platform in India for two days, MeitY has asked Telegram to disable its messaging editing facility for users in India until June 30.
NTA is of the opinion that the feature that allows users to edit messages has been misused to provide false evidence of the leak of examination papers. It is alleged by the investigators that certain channel owners have gone on to edit their messages after the completion of the examinations by replacing any previous attachment to it with the question papers themselves. Given that even after an edit Telegram preserves the timestamp, the edited posts gave rise to the impression that the papers had already been distributed prior to the examination itself.
Not only does this false "evidence" cause a lot of confusion among the aspiring candidates, but it also harms the credibility of the examination process itself.
This measure has been implemented after a series of coordinated actions carried out by Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) along with other law enforcement agencies who had identified fraud networks based on Telegram who had been targeting students. These authorities state that many such channels, groups, and bots that have been posting about fake question papers of NEET examinations have been shut down. In most cases, these networks would end up collecting large sums of money from desperate students by promising access to their alleged papers.
It has been recommended by NTA that candidates must wait for any news regarding examinations to be announced only by NTA through its official channels. Students must also not pay money to anyone for getting the papers or getting insider information regarding the examination. Though the current actions are a source of inconvenience for some Telegram users, it is temporary in nature.
