Lara Croft Returns in Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis brings Lara Croft back in a stunning Unreal Engine 5 adventure, launching worldwide on February 12, 2027.

Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis exploring ancient ruins in the Unreal Engine 5 reboot announced at Summer Game Fest 2026.

Summer Game Fest 2023, an event that never fails to get gamers excited around the world, was held not long ago and saw some of the largest studios presenting their most daring projects to look forward to. However, one of the biggest surprises at this year's festival has surely been the unveiling of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which is the remake of the 1996 game that introduced the character of Lara Croft over two decades ago.

The timing could not have been more perfect because this year's October will mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Tomb Raider. However, developers chose to do far more than simply recreate what worked in the original game. The creators of Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics have chosen to completely remake Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis by bringing it into the current day.

Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis: Lara Croft Returns

At the center of Legacy of Atlantis lies the return of the iconic character of Lara Croft, who is once again voiced by Alix Wilton Regan. This game will follow up on the very plot that was used to launch Tomb Raider while pushing every single element forward to the next level.

Once again, players will find themselves on an adventure spanning the whole planet to gather the different parts of an artifact which belongs to the lost world of Atlantis. As players progress through the game, Lara will be exposed to different traps, discoveries, and even dinosaurs, which were considered one of the main features of the original game.

Although the plot itself may look familiar to gamers, it is known from the official sources that the story was greatly developed by the developers to make it even more cinematic.

Built With Unreal Engine 5

Another fascinating aspect about the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is that the game has received a complete technical rework, and all the content and assets have been developed using the powerful Unreal Engine 5 technology, allowing for creating highly realistic and immersive settings.

Contrary to the previous title, which was mainly composed of a series of disconnected puzzle-based levels, with some sort of connection in terms of how players would progress through these levels, the upcoming game will feature a far more open world and exploration-oriented gameplay experience.

By opting for such an approach, developers stay true to current trends within action-adventure titles.

Collaboration Between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog

The Legacy of Atlantis game will be created in cooperation between Crystal Dynamics and a Polish studio named Flying Wild Hog.

The first studio mentioned is well-known for its close ties with the Tomb Raider series and is recognized as one of the best at making games about the life of Lara Croft. The Flying Wild Hog team boasts several other successful games like Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior, among others.

This collaboration may be called one of the most bold and ambitious in terms of development of this franchise in recent years.

Amazon's New Tomb Raider Universe

Unveiling Legacy of Atlantis goes far beyond the release of one game. Rather, it marks the start point for Amazon's strategy aimed at rebooting and continuing the legendary series of games.

The company made a statement regarding its intention to become part of Tomb Raider in 2022, with Legacy of Atlantis marking its beginning.

According to the statement, Legacy of Atlantis is just a prelude to a completely new game titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst, set to come out by 2027. As strange as it may sound, but Catalyst is predicted to follow the storyline initiated by Tomb Raider: Underworld, released back in 2008.

In other words, Amazon plans to not only preserve the past of the legendary game series but also create a future for it.

State of Play Debut Creates Massive Buzz

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis trailer made its first appearance at Sony's latest State of Play event, which is arguably one of the largest digital events organized by PlayStation to preview its upcoming games.

The trailer instantly received much anticipation from long-term Tomb Raider fans due to its depiction of spectacular environments, tomb raiding, innovative traversal features, and hints about Atlantis story that made Tomb Raider one of the most significant game series in history.

It offered everything gamers desired, combining classic elements of the game and following modern game development principles.

Release Date Confirmed

There will be no speculation regarding the launch window, because the official release date has been announced by the developers.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set for a release date of February 12, 2027. The game will likely become one of the biggest action-adventure titles of the year, heralding the dawn of a new era for Lara Croft.

Featuring impressive graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5, enhanced story-telling, exploration akin to open-world games, and a beloved hero making his comeback, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis looks like the most highly anticipated game of its franchise yet.

Other Highlights From State of Play

Despite Lara Croft stealing a lot of the limelight, there were many other exciting announcements at Sony's State of Play event.

Among the most important announcements was that of Marathon, which launched their second season of content dubbed Nightfall. The new season is a brand new start for all players in terms of progression as it seeks to offer a balanced competitive experience through updates in content.

This clearly illustrates the trend where developers are now placing emphasis on both live service games and standalone single player experiences.

While Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis certainly draws inspiration from one of the greatest games in the history of video games, it is quite clear that this isn't just a game looking to cash in on nostalgia. With a full remake of the classic adventure along with an expansion of the lore and an increase in open-world gameplay elements, Crystal Dynamics, Flying Wild Hog, and Amazon Game Studios seem to be setting new boundaries for the Tomb Raider franchise.

With the 30th anniversary of the series right around the corner, Legacy of Atlantis is shaping up to be the perfect sequel for Tomb Raider. Should this game turn out as well as its reveal trailer promises to do, then February 2027 could very well go down as one of the most important months in Tomb Raider's entire history.
