YouTube AI Search Feature Will Change How You Discover Videos Forever

Google seems to be silently revamping its interactions with YouTube in an effort to make them more conversational and driven by AI. The tech giant has launched a new trial on the video platform, which allows users to type in full questions into a search field in order to get not only video responses but also a combination of video clips, Shorts, and even AI-written explanations relevant to the question.

YouTube AI Search

In essence, the Google trial for YouTube makes searching for information on the video-sharing platform much more dynamic and personalized for the user. This new function allows users to search using the platform as if they were speaking with a chatbot. Apart from giving videos that fit the request, it also gives written explanations along with additional information on specific topics and content collections based on a certain search phrase or keyword.

A Conversational Shift in YouTube Search

The most interesting part of this feature is the ability to interact through chat. After enabling this option, one will see an “Ask YouTube” button added right to the search bar. With it on, the regular interface turns into a chat-based one allowing users to enter a question as a whole, not several scattered keywords. It perfectly correlates with the general tendency towards using conversational AI interfaces in other applications.

Instead of entering “Apollo 11 landing,” a user will be able to ask something like “Tell me about the Apollo 11 moon landing.” In return, he will receive an answer with some facts on the subject, an informative summary, and even selected videos and Shorts on such topics as Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

How the AI Search Experience Works

The usage of this feature is pretty simple, particularly for those who are already using YouTube Premium within the US, since this feature is only available there at the moment. Once this function is activated, here’s how the process goes:

Users should first enable the option on their YouTube Premium account settings. Then, the button named “Ask YouTube” appears in the search bar area. Once clicked, this will redirect users to an interface with a chatbox where they can enter their questions. Additionally, users will see examples of possible prompts related to education and creative content.

Once the question is entered and analyzed by the system, the AI will generate a feed page where various types of media are displayed in different categories – short answers, video answers, clips, and Shorts.

Smarter Results Based on Query Intent

A fascinating part about this feature is how it evolves depending on the kind of question posed. If the query is basic or just needs some factual information, then the AI usually provides an answer in form of a structure summary along with accompanying video. However, for some follow-ups or deeper inquiries, the answers provided may be more elaborate, sometimes in form of a listing or profile information.

But despite its promising potential, it seems like not all searches will result in this kind of interaction. For some queries, a regular list of results might still be seen.

Limitations and Early-Stage Challenges

However, while this feature might appear promising, it’s not without its flaws since it’s only in the experimental phase. There might be situations where the accuracy of the information generated by AI will be somewhat flawed. It might not give out comprehensive results and in certain cases, the summary might be inaccurate.

This is why Google has limited access to this feature only to those aged 18 and older, and has made it available only to users who have opted for the premium version. Google aims to gather user feedback before implementing this feature widely.

From the perspective of the user, they need to keep one thing in mind AI-generated information needs to be verified from other sources as well.

Looking into the future, Google has much more in store than the limited test it has been conducting. There have been efforts towards integrating conversational search features across their platform, with YouTube being one of the areas under development. If this succeeds, the way users search for videos and information can change drastically, not only on YouTube but on all Google applications.

It is highly likely that the ability to ask questions in search engines will eventually be available to users who are not part of the Premium membership program and will be rolled out globally. If this takes place, there might be a shift from the current passivity of users when using YouTube to something entirely different.

In essence, this experiment represents the future of search engines as we know it.
