YouTube Expands Picture in Picture Globally Making Multitasking Easier for Mobile Users

This is an important step towards improving the user experience, as YouTube has decided to implement its picture-in-picture (PiP) playback capability worldwide. This will be implemented gradually throughout the next few months, lifting previous geographical and personal restrictions placed on this useful functionality.

YouTube Picture in Picture

This move by YouTube comes at a time when there have been attempts to improve the user experience in terms of video consumption on their platform. The picture-in-picture mode allows one to view videos from a mini player while doing other things, such as accessing other apps and websites.

The most significant highlight in this rollout is the accessibility for users who are not premium members. In the past, the use of PiP was limited by certain regions or even certain user categories. However, now YouTube is going to make PiP available for long-form videos, excluding music videos, for all users except those in the USA, where PiP works in its previous form.

This will mean that users from India and other countries will finally get the opportunity to view videos without interruption and switch between apps simultaneously, but the video will remain a long one and not a music one because of copyright limitations. For the time being, users who do not have a YouTube Premium membership and come from the United States will not face any difference because the function already works for them as usual.

YouTube is ensuring that there remains a tiered experience with regards to its subscription services. Those who have subscribed to the YouTube Premium service would still be offered the full package of the PiP experience. These users will continue to benefit from a PiP experience that allows the playback of music and non-music content.

However, those who have subscribed to YouTube Premium Lite can keep enjoying the same functionalities as they were provided initially. The PiP experience available with YouTube Premium Lite applies to long non-music content on both Android and iOS platforms.

PiP technology is user-friendly and is intended to integrate seamlessly into the mobile experience. When playing any video in YouTube, all you have to do is swipe up or tap the home button, and the app will minimize. The video will minimize to a smaller player that will appear as a window in your screen.

The window player can then be moved to any part of the screen according to user preference. The user gets to watch the video as they perform other activities, such as messaging or browsing the Internet.

In case of any problems with this feature, here are a couple of things to try. The first thing is to make sure that the application is up-to-date. If it is an outdated version, it may not contain the latest updates, including the ability to use PiP. The settings of your phone or tablet also matter. This technology has system permissions both on Android and iOS. Therefore, make sure that they are enabled.

The worldwide deployment of the PiP feature can be considered as yet another milestone in the development of YouTube into a mobile-first service. By adding PiP for more and more users, YouTube is taking care of one of the most desired functionalities the ability to multitask without neglecting the content being played.

In light of increasingly fierce competition in the sphere of video streaming services, such functionalities are not an option any longer; they have turned into a must.
