Apple iOS 27 Beta Hints at Foldable iPhone Ultra and Touchscreen MacBook Launch in 2026

Hidden references inside Apple's iOS 27 and macOS 27 developer betas suggest the company could finally launch a foldable iPhone Ultra and a touchscreen MacBook in 2026.

Apple's Foldable iPhone

The annual developer conference of Apple has long since not only served as a platform for introducing software updates. Apart from the dazzling show, there can usually be found many hints concerning Apple's future plans hidden in its beta versions. The references in the hidden code, interface changes, and new frameworks developed by Apple developers have always offered a sneak preview of future hardware. After the introduction of iOS 27 and macOS 27 in WWDC 2026, experts have noted once again that history is about to repeat itself.

As Mark Gurman, an Apple reporter who works for Bloomberg, suggests, there are several references that may indicate that Apple is working on its two most expected devices – the first-ever foldable iPhone as well as a touchscreen MacBook. While nothing was officially stated by Apple, the references found in iOS 27 and macOS 27 builds are generating hope that Apple will release its products in these two areas which have remained untouched for years now.

iOS 27 May Have Revealed Apple's Foldable iPhone Plans

Speculations around the possibility of an Apple-made foldable iPhone have been circulating for years. Meanwhile, other smartphone manufacturers made rapid advancements in the development of foldable technologies, while Apple stayed quiet about the matter.

But the new iOS 27 beta release might provide more clues than ever that the Cupertino company has plans for its foldable iPhone.

According to Gurman, one of the most significant findings was found in the iPhone Mirroring application that came with macOS 27. He says that the program now has more layout flexibility that is very similar to the larger screens that users expect after opening their foldable iPhone up like a tablet.

It may not seem much at first glance, but software adaptation to screen flexibility is vital for foldable iPhones. Smartphones with regular screens usually have predictable proportions, but foldables have different uses of their displays.

Other technical references found within iOS 27 are even more interesting. They refer to such things as "foldState," "angleDegrees," and support for multiple hardware displays. All of those references correlate extremely well with the features needed for a foldable smartphone.

The "foldState" reference would be used by the operating system to know whether the smartphone was open, partly folded, or closed. The "angleDegrees" reference might refer to determining where exactly the smartphone was folded and could be responsible for providing new experiences like Samsung's Flex Mode. Support for multiple hardware displays means that the operating system is preparing itself to handle two displays at once. Those references alone cannot prove anything. Taken together, they provide very convincing evidence.

App Adaptability

App adaptability was one of the key topics discussed at the WWDC event of 2026 by Apple. Developers were advised to develop applications that would work well with different screen sizes and aspect ratios.

Although the move is justified with the ever-growing range of Apple's products, many observers suspect that there may be more behind the company's strategy.

The problem here is that the release of a foldable iPhone will create a new challenge for the developers since an application will have to switch from the smartphone mode to the larger square shape of tablets without any problems.

This may indicate that Apple is preparing itself for some major changes before introducing the new products. The company is known to do so in advance.

iPhone Ultra Could Become Apple's Most Revolutionary iPhone

The device itself has gained significant attention as being labeled an "iPhone Ultra," based on various industry reports.

While there has been no mention of such terminology used by Apple, the rumors about this device have gained momentum over the past few months. Industry analysts believe that dummy hardware units of the new iPhone Ultra are being manufactured as Apple prepares to finalize the product. In case these rumors hold true, Apple's strategy of launching its foldable phone can be entirely different than its usual launch plans.

According to reports, Apple has plans of splitting the release cycle for the latest version of its smartphone line. This means that while premium versions, which include the foldable iPhone Ultra and the iPhone 18 Pro range will come out in September, the rest of the line will be released in Spring. This move will help Apple in showcasing its premium products without undermining its other product lines.

macOS 27 Also Hints at a Touchscreen MacBook

Apple's newest betas might not only hide foldable surprises. As per Gurman, there are multiple modifications to macOS 27 that could make it ready to embrace a new product line from Apple: the touchscreen MacBook, which Apple executives have long been refusing to launch.

What is particularly interesting about the modification, is that it relates to one of the features in Mac that enables users to extend or mirror their screen via iPad - Sidecar.

The new version allegedly enables users to engage in touchscreen interaction while connected with the iPad. Of course, this innovation makes using Sidecar easier for people, but what is even more interesting is that it could pave the way for supporting touch on Mac.

Touchscreen laptops were never viewed positively by Apple officials because they claimed that such devices would negatively affect the Mac user experience. Nevertheless, times have changed greatly since then.

Small Interface Tweaks Could Signal a Bigger Transition

Some other changes made to the interface in macOS 27 have also added fuel to the fire about Macs with touch capabilities.

This includes the inclusion of pull-to-refresh gestures, which are common interactions typically associated with smartphones and tablets. While this feature may work using the trackpad, the addition of this feature to macOS has caught many people off guard.

Apple has also revamped the interface for Siri in the Mac. As per reports, the new interface of Siri is going to come with a pill-like design that is expected to eventually match the Dynamic Island design seen in future MacBook display cutouts.

Despite all of these seeming minor tweaks in the software, Apple is well known for including the necessary software features ahead of hardware advancements. Things that seem trivial at first glance can turn out to be quite significant.

OLED Touchscreen MacBooks Could Arrive Soon

This year, it had been reported that Apple was working on a range of new MacBook Pros that came with touchscreen capabilities using OLED screens. According to some suppliers along the chain, these high-end computers might have been launched before the end of 2026.

Assuming that is still on schedule, the new features found on macOS 27 may actually be what Apple has done to prepare the way ahead for both the users and developers. The OLED screen technology promises deeper black colors and increased power efficiency when compared with the existing laptop screens from Apple.

Apple Is Entering Markets It Once Avoided

Should Apple end up launching both a foldable iPhone and touchscreen MacBook, it would be one of the greatest strategic moves the company had made in years.

Foldable phones are not anymore experimental products as companies like Samsung, Google, OPPO, and Honor have launched multiple iterations of this product type.

In the same vein, the Windows-based systems also have touchscreen computers on offer to their users. The fact that Apple is yet to launch any device from these two product types is mostly seen as a sign of caution rather than an inability to create such devices. This is a trait that has always helped Apple succeed throughout its history.

It is because of the company’s policy of entering mature markets only when it knows how to provide a better experience.

Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that none of these pieces of software proves that Apple will develop future products.

The hidden references may have something to do with prototypes, internal testing, or features that are never released to customers. Indeed, Apple has made no comments about its plans concerning foldable iPhone and touchscreen MacBook. But there are too many hints to ignore the possibility anymore. As shown by its history, Apple likes to prepare software developers in advance through software updates. And this looks like the same trick again.

In case all these predictions come true, 2026 may become an extremely significant year for Apple. A foldable iPhone Ultra will allow the company to join a very promising part of the market. At the same time, touchscreen MacBook can radically change people's understanding of Apple's product range. Consumers who are waiting for Apple's truly innovative products can enjoy them very soon.

People who intend to buy expensive Apple products in the near future might wait until it becomes obvious whether all these rumors were right.
