Fortnite Was Removed From the App Store Back in 2020
It all began back in 2020 when Epic launched their own direct purchasing system in Fortnite. Epic Games created an alternative means for people to purchase game items that didn't go through Apple's own payment method.
Apple swiftly reacted by banning Fortnite from the App Store, stating that Epic Games had gone against the App Store rules and regulations. The company insisted that all developers were forced to utilize Apple's own payment system, which allowed Apple to collect a commission from each transaction carried out within its operating system.
On the other hand, Epic argued that Apple created an unfair business environment where its own App Store policy gave them full control over all apps available for distribution via iPhone and iPad. They claimed it was not fair competition. This conflict resulted in some of the largest legal cases in the world of technology.
Apple and Epic’s Battle Became Bigger Than Just Fortnite
Despite having begun due to Fortnite being pulled, the debate quickly turned into a discussion regarding the extent to which platform owners were entitled to control developers who worked with them.
Epic Games has been accusing Apple of restricting developer's rights to create alternative billing methods or third-party application stores since it believes that Apple’s commission-based model hinders competition and reduces choices for consumers. According to Epic Games, the company that developed Fortnite, the latest version of Fortnite available on iOS works on all devices, which are at least one generation past the iPhone 11 range and newer. Newer versions of the iPhone SE can also access Fortnite through this update.
On iPads, Fortnite can be installed on all newer iPad Pro series, the iPad Air 4th generation and onwards, and iPad mini 6 and onward. Fortnite Had Already Returned to Android Earlier
The game had actually found its way back onto Android phones before its return to iOS through the Google Play Store.
Earlier, Android users would be required to download the game through Epic’s launcher application independently. The game is now easily available for Android users through the Google Play Store.
