Google Maps gets a major redesign with AI-powered Ask Maps and Immersive 3D Navigation.
Users can discover places by asking real-world questions directly inside the Maps app.
Ask Maps is rolling out in the US and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support coming soon.

Google Maps is one of Google's flagship products; this implies that Google has no intention of keeping it isolated from the features of Google Gemini. Consequently, Google has updated Maps with a new 3D interface and AI-powered conversational search, making navigation smarter and more interactive than ever before. This aims to enhance the user experience for its two billion global users. A new "Ask Maps" feature has been introduced to Google Maps, powered by Google's Gemini AI model, allowing Maps to function not merely as a navigation tool but as an AI assistant.
In essence, starting today, Google Maps will offer users more opportunities to engage in conversations with an AI, alongside delivering a brand-new navigation experience. While the new navigation system is not solely focused on the AI revolution, Google states that Gemini plays a pivotal role in making it effective. Users can now ask direct questions within the app such as identifying a coffee shop with no waiting lines for charging a phone, or locating a nearby public tennis court equipped with lighting and Maps will respond to these queries in a conversational manner, displaying relevant locations on a custom map.
Google has introduced a new Immersive Navigation feature that displays a realistic 3D view of the real world, encompassing buildings, roads, overpasses, and the surrounding terrain. While driving, this feature highlights critical information such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help users easily navigate complex turns and merges. According to Google, this represents the most significant transformation to the driving experience within Maps in the last decade.
This new, specialized 3D view is generated by Google's Gemini model, which analyzes data derived from Street View and aerial imagery. The Immersive Navigation feature is currently available in the United States and is slated for future release in other countries including India across Android, iOS, CarPlay, and Android Auto platforms. Meanwhile, the "Ask Maps" feature has begun rolling out on Android and iOS devices in both the U.S. and India, with desktop support expected to arrive shortly.
Google Maps holds data on over 300 million locations and continuously receives reviews and information from a community of more than 500 million contributors. If you have previously searched for or saved specific locations such as vegetarian restaurants "Ask Maps" will prioritize providing suggestions tailored to those preferences, thereby helping users make the right decisions. Once a location is selected, users can perform various actions directly within Maps such as booking a restaurant, saving the location, sharing it with friends, or initiating navigation.
Users can now zoom out to preview the road ahead and easily anticipate upcoming turns, aided by transparent building overlays. Maps' voice guidance will now sound more natural than ever much like a companion giving directions. For instance, instead of simply saying, "In 500 meters, take the exit," you might hear: "Pass this exit and take the next exit for Illinois 43 South." Maps will now also indicate which routes help avoid traffic or which toll roads offer faster travel times, empowering users to make more informed decisions. With the introduction of these new features, Google Maps is poised to further widen its lead over competitors such as Apple Maps and other navigation applications.
