Meta has officially brought its free Edits video editing app to macOS, introducing a powerful desktop editing experience with a multi-track timeline, keyframing, advanced colour grading, AI agent integration and more. The platform has already reached 50 million users.

Meta has officially released its Edits video editing application for desktops, making the free video editing application available on macOS less than a year since its introduction to the mobile world. The latest move aims to offer more flexibility to creators interested in editing their videos and offers a larger editing space with the addition of some advanced tools for easy handling of various video, audio, and visual effects.

As per Brett Westervelt, head of the Edits application, the app has attracted 50 million users till now. Meta aims to cater to content creators who require more advanced features compared to the one available in the mobile phone. According to Meta, the latest release caters to the needs of those people who are stuck with a small screen while editing various video clips on the phone.

Among the most significant upgrades on Edits for desktop is the full multi-track timeline. This enables users more room for creative manipulation when positioning their video clips, audio and other elements. In addition, Edits allows users to use keyframing, which makes it possible to create dynamic transitions and animate various elements in the video. When it comes to audio editing, the application has waveforms, which help users locate beats and create well-timed cuts.

Also, Meta has added a set of advanced color grading options such as color wheel, log conversion and curves. With these tools, it becomes easier to adjust the look of videos. Additionally, users can import their own LUTs and font files, thus preserving their preferred color profiles and typography.

Another notable addition is support for connecting AI agents to the editor through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This integration opens the door for AI-powered assistants to work alongside creators and help with different aspects of their editing projects. It reflects Meta's interest in bringing emerging AI workflows into its creative tools rather than limiting the platform to traditional editing features.

The desktop version also retains several popular features from the mobile app. Users get access to Instagram's licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, along with hundreds of sound and video effects. Automatic captions are also available without usage limits and support multiple languages, making it easier for creators to prepare videos for different audiences and platforms.

Meta is also making the transition between mobile and desktop more convenient. Audio and text styles saved in the mobile app can carry over to the desktop version, allowing creators to maintain consistency when switching devices. Users can further customise their editing experience with keyboard shortcuts, including the option to import shortcuts from other video editing applications.

Once editing is complete, users can publish their videos directly to Instagram or export the finished files for use on other platforms. This gives creators more flexibility in how they distribute their content without limiting them to Meta's social media ecosystem.

With Edits now available on macOS, Meta is expanding its free editing platform into a more capable desktop solution. Its combination of multi-track editing, advanced colour controls, AI agent support and mobile-to-desktop continuity could make it an appealing option for creators looking for professional-style editing tools without immediately turning to expensive software.
